UN Resolution 68/262 - Territorial Integrity of Ukraine

Postby Paphitis » Sun Apr 27, 2014 7:32 am

Cyprus has taken Center Stage in the Crimean Crisis!

The Republic of Cyprus has thrown its full weight behind its support for Ukraine's Territorial Integrity and even address the UN General Assembly to state the following:

The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations Nicos Emiliou, who favored the resolution, said that "Cyprus underlines the importance of respecting the fundamental principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of all states, including Ukraine".[3] Emiliou urged to conduct a probe on all acts of violence and encouraged Russia to engage in a diplomatic solution.[3]

The Republic of Cyprus is obviously on a collision course with the Russians, but there is no other option.

The RoC was one of a hundred UN States to vote in favour of UN Resolution 68/262 which opposes Russia's actions in Crimea and calls on Russia to respect the Ukraine's Territorial Integrity and Sovereignty.

Yes, but any sanctions the UN decides to impose should be argued by the RoC and why not impose the same on Turkey???

Yes of course. Agree 100%

It would have been good if that RoC Ambassador mentioned this as well and that this was the main criteria for the RoC's support for the Resolution - countries must respect the Territorial Integrity and Sovereignty of other States and if they do not, then the violating country should be subject to sanctions.

Problem is the UN is the USA. It pays it, houses it and gets its licences to invade other countries with no consequences. It is a double standard organ where the US holds the reins. I demand to hear Mr Emilios reject any sanctions on Russia unless the were also imposed on Turkey. They can't have it both ways.

I've just written to David Lidington at the Foreign and Commonwealth office making that very point.

You protest at the annexation of Crimea by Russia where the majority are ethnic Russians and there has been little or no ethnic cleansing but in Cyprus you fail to protest directly to your friend Turkey who kicked 180,000 Greek Cypriots out of their homes and replaced them with 100,000+ settlers from mainland Turkey.

No doubt I will get the usual replies, "we support UN Resolutions.... etc"

Yes there is a lot of unfairness in the system.

I don't know about opposing the the sanctions! I don't believe this to be a good move at all.

But at the same time, the RoC could have rubbed their noses in all their bullshit and mention its own Territorial Integrity.
