There’s no such thing as a “respected Greek journalist” because they’re all clueless and publishing garbage all day.

So who is this 'Lygeros' person ? A Greek or a Cypriot ?

Don’t waste your time with those living in Greece because they’re victims of their junk media… worse than that of Turkey. :)

Lygeros is a respected political analyst, he is Greek, works for leading serious publications and collaborates with foreign ones like Monde Diplomatique and The Times.

Erol, Greece has taken a back seat in the Cyprus issue ever since 1974, the official line being that "Cyprus decides and Greece supports". However that was before the oil and gas finds southwest of Cyprus and the likely gas and oil deposits south of Crete and west of the Peloponnese. There is pressure on Greece from its EU and US allies to take a more active approach to Cyprus and as a guarantor power it most likely will. These days there is a lot of talk in Athens about the future as an energy hub.

Greek shipowners who own about 5000 ocean going merchant ship have been committing to record numbers of LNG carriers, and this is not unconnected with the gas situation in Europe.

I agree with your view that the sudden influx of revenues from the gas and oil in an economically immature society are likely to do more harm than good. We are a LONG way away from the Norwegian approach where they set up a sort of national trust fund that invested their oil revenues for the common benefit of present and future generations. In our case the likely scenario will be to create lots of unnecessary "bodies" with "positions" for relatives and friends, lots of new infrastructure "projects" with lucrative contracts for the companies that usually do these things. Like you say, to piss the money away.
