Turkish engineering at its finest...

Turkey: High-speed train breaks down on first day

Turkey's first high-speed train has broken down just a few hours after the prime minister inaugurated it in a glowing speech about the country's technical prowess, it's been reported. The glitch happened when a dislocated contact wire cracked the windshield of the sleek new train, and the electricity had to be cut for 30 minutes to fix the problem...

THREE ski slopes collapse at £19m holiday resort in Turkey...

Dramatic footage has been released showing the moment three ski jumps collapsed at a supposedly state-of-the-art holiday resort in Turkey.

The video shows dust billowing up as the structure gives way at the £19 million Palandöken ski resort, which was built in the city of Erzurum for the 2011 Winter Universiade.

Investigators who attended the site blamed errors made during the construction work, after finding evidence of negligence and basic engineering faults.

Turkey's first theme park under threat of collapse after heavy rain...

Turkey's first theme park, which opened in İstanbul last year and is inspired by the world-famous Disneyland, is in danger of collapsing following heavy rainfall which seriously damaged roads next to the park.

The heavy rain which fell on Saturday night caused cracks to emerge in roads next to the Vialand Park, which was named as a standout project by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party). The roads were already in poor condition and the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) and the Eyüp municipality had not yet started any repair works.

After the rain, several cracks -- including one 100 meters in length -- were reported on a road near the theme park.

The area, which used to be an abandoned stone quarry, had been filled with sand and mud dumped there during a project to clean up the Golden Horn before construction of the theme park. It is claimed that this may have caused the weakness in the roads in the area, and that the theme park has also been built in a structurally unsound area.

Three killed in Turkey construction site collapse

Three workers were killed when they fell down while working on a viaduct, which is part of a highway that connects to Istanbul's controversial third bridge, local media reported Sunday.

The workers fell late Saturday from a height of 50 metres, the reports said adding that 11 were rescued by a crane when they were stuck in the viaduct located on the Asian side of Istanbul, Xinhua reported.

The accident happened when part of the concrete on the viaduct, a bridge composed of several small spans for crossing a valley or a gorge, collapsed during construction.

Turkish Rail: Water Leaks in Marmaray Tunnel

Members of the public using Istanbul’s new Marmaray metro line have greatly worried fellow commuters by reporting to news outlets that they have seen fractures, cracks, and water leaks on the walls of the rail tunnel, with the Turkish State Railways (TCDD). This adds to the concern after confirming that there are currently leaks. Although the TCDD officials have attempted to alleviate fears by stating that the leaks were not in areas under the sea but under land, the president of the Istanbul branch of the United Transportation Union (BTS), Mithat Ercan, has issued a warning over the safety of the Marmaray system, transferring that “For five months, from the day Marmaray was open till today, a test drive is being made here [and] passengers are being used as sandbags.”

Six injured in building site collapse on new Turkish railway

Six workers were injured when part of a building site on a new Turkish high-speed rail line, still under testing, collapsed in the northwestern province of Sakarya on Thursday, the Turkish state railway company said.

The incident on the 533-km (330-mile) track, a high-profile project that will link Istanbul and the capital Ankara, took place less than three weeks after a mining disaster killed 301 workers and drew protests over Turkey's poor record on workplace safety.
