Niazi's Restaurant Pre '74

Postby Lakram » Sat Aug 09, 2014 4:24 pm

Hello
I have a question for the more senior members of the forum.
Does anyone know where Niazi's Restaurant was located in Limassol before he moved to Kyrenia in '74?
and does the building still exist?

It was a favourite of my parents in the late '60's and it would be great if I could get a photo of the building in September when I visit.
(Wishful thinking I know, but I can but try)
Many thanks

You best bet may be to go to the restaurant at the junction of Agkyras (Ankara) and Fevzi Pasha, opposite the mosque. The Turkish Cypriot proprietor of that restaurant, Ayhan, is the official Mukhtar for the Turkish Cypriots living in Limassol and, although he himself is not originally from Limassol, he will most likely know somebody who can assist you.

Thanks for that Tim.
It's looking like that is close to where the restaurant was, as a quote elsewhere states "it was down near the green mosque", which I would assume is one of the two mosques currently located in the old Turkish part of town.

This is the smaller of the two mosques. I have never heard either of them referred to as the "green mosque".

Nor I Tim. It was just a single comment in the guest book of their current website. Every little clue helps I guess.
What makes you think it's the smaller of the two? Is it visibly green?
I'm on a mission now :-)

The mosque I am referring to is quite clearly smaller than the other one (which, anyhow, is known as cami-i-kebir or büyük cami). No, it is not green nowadays, but may have been once. The large mosque has been made available for use by Muslims in general living in Limassol, and has an imam from Syria, while an imam appointed by the Turkish Cypriot religious authorities comes to perform Friday and religious holiday prayers in Turkish at the small mosque.

I have just looked at their current website. Why don't you send them an e-mail asking for the address of their old premises in Limassol? The street names and numbers are basically the same now as they were in the old Turkish part of Limassol, so you should be able to find it.

Great minds think alike :-)
I've emailed them and I'll let you know if they reply. I've found a good street map of Limassol, so hopeful.
