Hellenic Bank, or National Bank of Greece (Cyprus). I think Piraeus Bank also does online banking.

You will have problems with UK bank transactions abroad - have heard horror stories.

Hellenic Bank is Cypriot.

it is the second largest Cypriot bank

If you want ease of banking in Cyprus, it's still best to open an account once you are over.

It's actually a UK Bank, under UK Financial law and guaranteed by the UK just like any other UK Bank.

Really? Well I didn't expect that :? I presumed it would be used accordingly as a local account on the island.

I won't be doing that then

Negative! Opening an account in BoC UK is not like opening an account with BoC in Cyprus.

Completely seperate Banks operating under completely different regulatory conditions. BoC Cyprus is like any other UK Bank in a nutshell only very small.

Sorry! It's owned by the arch Ottoman His Beastitude that still has not recognized the Hellenic Genocide.

That's probably why you like it so much because you are from Northern Greece after all!

I might be on shaky ground here, but I think you will find that Barclays in Cyprus was bought out by some shady Russian oligarch or other and continues trading under the Barclays name but has nothing to do with Barclays in the UK any more. On top of that, they do not offer day-to-day banking services. It so happens that I have a UK bank account with Barclays and a Cyprus bank account with Bank of Cyprus and, while I have had grievances with Barclays in the past, I have always found Bank of Cyprus to be friendly and efficient - the only gripe I have is that since the crisis, they have added a "statement charge" of EUR 2.50 per month that was not there before.

I've owned property in Cyprus since 2003 and have always kept just enough money in a bank account with the Hellenic to pay whatever bils are due. Also utilise JCC Smart to pay things like road tax, car insurance etc
