Is there a problem with stray dogs and cats in Cyprus?

Postby Kismet44 » Thu Jan 01, 2015 2:49 am

Do you think there is a problem with stray dogs or cats in Cyprus? What do you think the problem is if there is one and what if anything should be done about it? I'm working on an article about the situation and would like to hear the opinions of the people living in Cyprus. Many Thanks

If you're working on an article, presumably you have some statistics by which to set a standard level over which it becomes a "problem". What do you expect the threshold level to be that would cause a "problem"?

From my observations, I would say there is less of a "problem" than in some other European countries (if you are looking to highlight "problems"). Traditionally, a certain number of cats are encouraged to be free, and dogs are dealt with when and as seen, much as elsewhere.

- You'll most likely find that there is more of a "problem" with stray opinions (as bill's link suggests :P ).

There definitely is a problem with stray cats, and to a lesser extent dogs.

The problem with cats is idiot do-gooders feeding them which allows them to breed uncontrollably.

Cats, as with dogs, should be chipped and licensed. Those that aren't should be put down.

There is certainly a large feral cat population in the Limassol urban area. This an immediately observable, objective fact.

There are 10 rats per human (global average). You don't see them because (a) they are smaller (b) they stay away from roaming cats/dogs.

- Get rid of cats (especially feral cats) and dogs and you will very quickly start to see them rats!

There are also lots of free sparrows ... they make noise and shit on cars :x Lets put them in cages, cut their balls off or shoot them down to deal with this "problem"

I'm interested more in peoples opinions as to wether there is a problem with stays. Is it common to see cats or dogs roaming around the area?

With cats, very common indeed. Feral cats are ubiquitous.

Stray foreigners are a much more serious problem in Cyprus.
