RIP: Cyprus Airways

Postby Paphitis » Fri Jan 09, 2015 5:11 pm

As it was expected for a long while now, time is up for Cyprus Airways. According to local media, the announcement of the European Directorate General for Competition is coming out today and is expected to be negative. This essentially means that Cyprus Airways which has been in operation since 1947 will seize operations. 16 flights are scheduled for today and the late flight in from Athens tonight will also be its last.

During the following weeks the company will shut down and file for bankruptcy. The government spokesperson said that the government has made contingency plans for every scenario for both passengers and the company personnel.

According to unconfirmed information there is already a plan for passengers stranded in airports to be transferred to a private travel agency. Passengers from 11 Cyprus Airways flights which are planned for tomorrow will be transferred to other airlines but even at best case their flight times and possibly dates will be changed.

Well I hope this stupid Union accepts some of the responsibility. I seriously doubt it though.

I guess all the pilots and engineers will be moving to Greece now and work for Aegean who should whip them all up.

Some are probably going to go to Turkey and work for Turkish Airlines. There is already 30 odd Greek Pilots there based in Istanbul.

There is even a Greek Check Captain there.

Aviation has no borders.

There are jobs going at QATAR Airways, Cathay, Etihad, Saudi Air, AlMahah and more. Middle East is an option.

Any news on where the Pilots will end up? I see a mass exodus but to where?

What do you mean by that?

I know Aegean is recruiting and they have A320 orders yet to be delivered!

QATAR is another option but highly likely that you would end up in Saudi. Emirate Pilots are jumping ship.

350 jobs in Hong Kong too for 2015. Asia and Middle East are mad houses.

All the Americans are off to American and Delta as they are starting to recruit now and expat Americans just want to go home.

There are shortages in Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, QATAR, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Korea, and quite a few others.

Huge shortage in Turkey as well.

Some airlines might even be forced to park up some jets because they don't have the crews.

I see another boom within the next 2 years.

The U.S. is starting to move as well so Americans headed back home.

Personally, I think a new chapter will open up for A320 endorsed CyAir Pilots.

A lot of jobs going that pay amounts north of 200k USD for FO's. They will be earning 2 times more than CyAir. All that nonsense that they were overpaid in Cyprus was the biggest baloney.

The loser here is the RoC and the people.
