Seven EU countries support lifting sanctions on Russia

Austria, Hungary, Italy, Cyprus, Slovakia, France and the Czech Republic support lifting the anti-Russia sanctions

BRUSSELS, January 15. /TASS/. Seven EU countries support the lifting of Western sanctions on Russia, a diplomatic source in Brussels told TASS on Thursday.
“The sanctions’ lifting has been supported by Austria, Hungary, Italy, Cyprus, Slovakia, France and the Czech Republic,” he said.
A European diplomatic source close to the EU Council told TASS previously that foreign ministers of 28 EU member countries would not make any decisions on sanctions against Russia at their first meeting this year in Brussels on January 19. “Russia, of course, will be on the agenda of the Council (EU Council on Foreign Relations), but the specific issue of the sanctions - whether they should be cancelled, softened, renewed or not - will not be raised. The decision on sanctions should be taken in March,” he said.
According to another source, although no concrete decisions on sanctions are expected at the upcoming ministerial meeting, “the tone of this issue discussion should be softened.” “Ministers will most likely be preparing the ground for softening the sanctions regime. Perhaps the time has come,” said the diplomat.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported with reference to a document prepared by the EU foreign policy service that became available to WSJ reporters that the European Union was ready to soften the anti-Russian sanctions and for partial normalisation of relations with Russia if Moscow changes its stance on the situation in Ukraine. The newspaper says this document should be considered by the participants in the meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Brussels on January 19. The document will be presented in the next few days to the EU member states’ foreign ministers.

...too early for that, in any case nothing has changed, Putin is still in power, and the Crimea (and the Ukraine) remain as issues.

It seems ironic that Cyprus would be one of these seven, think about it.

Is TASS a reliable source?

The two situations are entirely different. Turkey's invasion of Cyprus has no resemblance to the dispute between Ukraine and Russia.

What is criminal and in need of protest is the cynical lack of sanctions against Turkey.

Indeed, as for sanctions against Turkey, and where Russia is buttering up Turkey with the offer of pipelines...

Come on GiG, what is the difference with Russia annexing the Crimea and Turkey annexing the north of Cyprus?

...indeed one can argue that Putin took as an example, Turkey's acts.

Plus our Government has not been doing a good job at arguing for sanctions against Turkey - which it supported against Russia.

The only difference is the lack of sanctions against Turkey.

The difference is that you haven’t studied Crimean history to see your folly because there’s no comparison whatsoever.

Both the Ukraine and Crimea were parts of the greater Russia when in 1954 Russia placed Crimea under the administration of Ukraine but still kept it as a separate entity. It was never given to them for keeps and at no time in history did Crimea belong to the Ukraine.

It’s like Cyprus merging Aradippou and Larnaca in 1954 for electoral and other convenient purposes as a district, and then in 1992 Cyprus grants independence to Larnaca, and later in 2014 Cyprus decides to retake Aradippou from the former merger they created.

Comparisons never work because no two cases are the same.

...a reason to support sanctions on Turkey, rather than lifting sanctions on Russia.
