Cyprus Mespila fruit.

Postby Cap » Sun Apr 05, 2015 6:53 pm

Everybody's tasted them, nearly everybody loves them, but nobody seems to know the exact species of tree indigenous to Cyprus.

Loquat is the 'official' English name, but even that is uncommon to people who know their fruit.

 In mainland Greece it is called "mousmoula", but ancient Greeks used to call it "mespilea".

However the Greeks of Cyprus kept the ancient name. Another proof that Greeks of Cyprus are more original Greeks than the Greeks of Greece.

Reminded of mosfilo jam. Yum!

BTW - The Cypriot language is most like ancient Greek because we didn't make the major changes Greece made as we were stuck in a vacuum due to the Brits helping to turkify us. All it proves is we have the same roots as our mainland brothers - Greek Cypriots thru and thru even if a little behind! :D

We have a plant in our garden. My Calabrese neighbors knew what they were. They call them nespola. Sounds like Mespila.
