It is alleged that special operations police officers have fired live ammunition at the crowd in Okmeydanı.

Was it the religious police?

There is such a thing in Saudi Arabia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_religious_police) although not yet in Turkey. If the present regime remains in place, it is only a matter of time.

Erdogan is a megalomaniac, generally such rulers, or in his case Sultans, do not last for ever. Mind you, he is good at designing palaces with 1000 rooms, the biggest in the world, costing almost 400 MILLION GB POUNDS !!

I live in hope ... but you have to admit that he is a great survivor, and is now ensconced as president with a high degree of immunity from prosecution even if his ex-party cannot form a majority government after June's elections.

He was hit in the head by a tear gas canister, in fact.

Sixteen year old Umut Boran, undergoing brain surgery after being hit in the head by a gas canister.

The boy's father says that his condition is good, but there are another thirty kids in the same hospital who are all seriously injured.

It seems the boy has been referred to a brain surgeon; he may not in fact be undergoing surgery. I hope this day passes without any fatalities.

Lawyers of the 234 people arrested in connection with the attempt to stage a Labour Day march to Taksim on Friday in Istanbul were attacked by rapid reaction force policemen when they tried to make an announcement at the entry to the Istanbul judicial complex at Çağlayan. They were forcibly expelled from the building, some of them being beaten with truncheons in the process.
