So that leaves you with the capsicum, coriander and splash of lemon then.

Cooking Souvlaki at home is men's business, it's a trick women invented to avoid cooking.

Yeah, men get the credit, and for what? Standing over warm charcoal holding a beer or whiskey and occasionally "turning" something?

All the while (and before and after) we're sweating in the kitchen cleaning the meats, marinading, chopping, threading onto souvlez or smeeelez! Washing a myriad of vegetables, chopping them for salads or making roast potatoes or a few yemista. Getting the pitta breads, tzatziki etc ready - plates cutlery tables etc etc etc!

Reh, there is no equality on souvla days!

Women do all the work and men claim all the glory!

Don't fret - I butter all the pitta bread for my English friends. :D

- Nice to see you back even if it is the smell of souvlaki that has eked you out ...

Blast from the past, Evagoras in Ermou in Famagusta was the THE place for it all, souvlaki, sheftalies, pastourma, loukanika, anything on the grill plus exceptional pickles.

Last July we had sheftalies at an upmarket place near the English school (in Nicosia for the uninitiated). It bordered a tennis club. They were superb. How do I know it was upmarket? Three shiny Harleys in the parking lot, put there by middle aged gents living their dream no doubt. It was dark and I did not see a name, maybe someone knows it.

Christakis is a bit of a landmark, it was there when I was going to primary school at Elenion and it still looks the same save for the plastic seats. Not the best, but the place is worth a visit to see what an old fashioned souvlaki joint was like.
