Slightly different from racism, I believe Cypriots fall into that category as well and probably many that aren't racist do too.

People in our forum, older and younger are all people who care other more and others less about Cyprus and its future. And I believe in a forum you can find brilliant people who - because they are interested in reading other people's thoughts and writing their own hoping for a change - are a bit more civilized, if it's the right word. Profound. Less cynical. I want to know your opinion and if you think you are racists yourselves.

I, myself do NOT think I am racist - except from the hatred Cypriot education developed in my heart for Turks. So, maybe you could call me a racist.
I admit, I hear Turkey and darken inside, I see their flag and feel 'That is the enemy', did not yet get over that. I am brainwashed indeed.
So, If asked I say I am not a racist BUT.. :!:
However, what I am for sure is a part of White Supremacy which is something I try to subside over the last few years and I am succeeding.
Despite that I may not like Indian culture the way I love Spanish culture, it doesn't mean they are less of people.
I have met some respectable Indian people here in UK - which is full of them.
One of my very good friends calls all brown people Pakistanous, just because she things everyone with that colour is on the same level and should fall in the same category for our own convenience... Because they are all Aloutoi, Mannoi, Kleftes and so on...
People that, yes they are very different from us, but very similar as well..
(You see, humans forget that we have more things in common than our differences)
Us (Cypriots) looking down on many other cultures just because they are different and we are the CIVILIZED (kai kala) ones. The CLEAN ones. Because they smell or do not bath or whatever stories and ASSUMPTIONS we grow our own fictions on how these people are as a nation. People who, in other countries that we would "bend over" to those today like UK, have management positions. All races that we bring over to do"the dirty jobs" for us so that we would pay less labour costs instead of giving jobs to other Cypriots. But no, the Cypriot would not clean windows or look after an old lady. Why do we treat them like slaves? Not like.. Why do we treat them AS Slaves?

Cypriots - THE GLOWING UNMISTAKABLE TENDER PERFECTION???

Yes we are racist!

is there anything wrong with that?

You won’t find a country or a people on this planet that are not racist because racism is human nature, so it’s pointless in pointing out “Cypriots” as racists.

being racist or bigot stems from an insecurity that dwells within the racist...I know for a fact that cypriot woman can't stand eastern european women..ask yourself why?.. is it because the russian ladies are tall blond and slim ? yeap i could see some insecurities/complexes emerging within some cyp women...

I'm not racist towards Eastern European Women.

When you live overseas, the racism does come through in Cypriots and Greeks. But they were victims of racism too, only as far back as 2 decades ago. It's amazing how the landscape changes or evolves over a relatively short space of time.

For instance, mixed marriages were discouraged and frowned upon. There was a lack of understanding towards the culture of the adopted country, and a belief of superiority. The locals, certainly believed they were superior too.

There was certainly racism all around from all parties, and in the old days it was even quite brutal especially in the areas I grew up in. I was raised in the country. Never saw a city until aged 10. To boot, I grew up in the highlands of the Snowies and its amazing I managed to stay out of jail or not end up murdered. I had a bit of history with the redneck cops in town and I identified really well with the movie Selma (watch it).

Even had our own little gang if you could call it that, more for our own protection. All Irish, Italian, Greek (there was 2 of us) and Spanish. Stuck together and we looked after each other.

We were such outcasts, even the Aboriginals were our "Brothers".

Of course many people are racists, but the way we treat other people or talk about them is very disrespectful..
And yeah, I have traveled a lot and noticed many things..
I also like meeting people from other cultures..
I hang out with many black people and in fact my best friend is a mavros..
We make white-black jokes ALL THE TIME, but it's fine because I know who he is..
Black people are treated badly everywhere, however..
He was telling me that when he was a kid, he and his family visited Greece and sat down to eat at a tavern.. The owner ignored them at first, did not bring them menus and after a while he told them to go away..

My problem is not that we are the only racist country in the world, cause we aint..
My problem is the way we treat people and this disrespect came from - not my grandparents generation I guess, but it must have developed from my parents' generation. People that are today 45-60..
Whenever I hear these people talk about foreigners I want to ask them WHY do they think they are better?

I do not quite know what experiences you guys have and how long those were..
I recently experienced my teenage years and afterwards my "studying abroad" experience, met way too many people and Cypriot behavior towards them sometimes makes me feel shame..
So yeah, every country has racists, my point was that the level of Racism in Cyprus is way too nasty..
Probably because our country is too small or maybe because everything we express we express it passionately..
Why not being friendly and warm to them..?

And don't take me wrong, I don't mean calling someone black makes him a racist..
I have been called white in black people's houses, only in the sense that "uncle made a white lady friend"..
But these people know my name, respect me, host me over their house for weeks and trust me with their car.. Generally treating me for what I really am to them, not by my colour or how my people treat them..
So, my black buddy calls my other friends with their names, however, my other friends say.. Ti kamnei o mavros sou re..? Never bothered asking for his name!! It doesn't bother me that they say that, what bothers me is that I have friends with this behavior.. People that are genuinely good, but they never learned to respect races, not essence..

Oh and about the women.....
Cypriot women are not racists over Russian etc. women..
Having complexes, being jealous or admiring of them is one, and being racist another..
I don't like how Russians have fallen on our island because they have their shops with Russian labels and do not bother adding Greek as well, but Cypriots seem to have no problem.. Yes they help our economy.. Future will show if we are happy with how we let other nations overtake us in this - not wild - way.. That is all from me about Russians, women and guys..
Plus, Cypriot women are pretty, unique and know how to dress better than many other nations..

The hatred against the Turks is not racism. We hate the Turks because they occupy 1/3rd of a our country, not because of their skin color or their religion. Those who invade and occupy your country are the definition of an enemy: "<i>a hostile nation or its armed forces, especially in time of war.</i>". Cypriots are not more or less racist than others. If you compare Cyprus with more developed countries Cypriots might seem more racist but that is only because those more developed countries have big industries and they need workers for their factories so they are more open to immigrants because immigrants are good for them... especially those countries who have low birth rates and their own population is aging.
