What does 'arni katharo' translate as?

Postby BerkshireScouse » Thu Jun 25, 2015 9:20 am

Hi

A little while ago, I bought different cuts of lamb from our local supermarket butcher and put them in the freezer. I’m having a barbie this weekend, and intend using one of these cuts.

Rather stupidly, however, I have forgotten exactly what the cuts were; the labels on the bags are in Greek but using the English alphabet. I’m pretty sure that ‘arni rifi meri’ translates as lamb chops, but despite using Google Translate and performing numerous internet searches, I’m still none the wiser as to what ‘arni katharo’ is. I’ve managed to ascertain that Katharo is somewhere on Crete, and that the word ‘katharo’ translates as ‘clear’, but neither of these is helpful in the context of discussing different cuts of lamb.

As things stand, the only way of finding out what’s in the bag is to defrost it. However, I don’t want to run the risk of doing this, only to discover that it isn’t suitable for the barbecue.
So if there’s anyone out there who can enlighten me as to what ‘arni katharo’ is, I’d be very grateful.

Many thanks in anticipation of your assistance.

arni rifi = baby lamb

meri = side

katharo = lean (as in no fat)

Yes, it's lamb that's been 'cleared' of the the fat - but it's not fat free - only the big lumps are cut away. It might be best left for a casserole rather than used on the barbecue - but what do I know about barbecues? Man's job! :P

Arni rifi, must be a new term.

Rifi, from erifion, young goat. And on the day of reckoning the sheep (amni) will be separated from the goats (erifia), the butcher was not a religious man I guess.
