If it helps at all, this is what my contract says, ad litteram, about the tenant, me, has to pay:

"To settle with the appropriate authorities the telephone, electricity, water and garbage taxes, excluding municipal taxes applied to the actual property"

Now, since this sewerage tax is not mentioned, I figure I'm safe not to pay it and if the owner thinks otherwise he's free to drag me to court :?

Or ask you to leave, minus your deposit and you are free to drag him to court! :)

Not gonna happen. I've had another try before this "stunt" of not returning the deposit but it didn't work. I have specifically checked with the agent to make sure it will be clearly stipulated in the contract (the return of the deposit) and it is. So no, that cannot happen.

Dont see how thay could be relevant but if you must know, its a little over 200€. Would have not made a difference to me if it was 5€ or €500 , principle is the same.

Dodod, why is it you object to paying taxes? Don't you get good value for money? Think of a world without sewerage...

Would you create an issue for €5? Even if you you would I am sure your landlord wouldn't and he would have paid that amount regardless. Did you talk to him? Just call him and tell him that you received a bill on his name and that he should come to collect it. If he tells you that you should pay, then tell him that it is not part of the agreement to pay such thing. If he insists then it depends on how much you want to continue living in his apartment... What does the tax paper say? I assume it would say that it should be paid until X date and that if it is not then an X amount of fine will be added? You probably have plenty of time to find another home if you can't come to an agreement with him.

It's not a tax. Instead of you (as house owner) having to build a 6m deep sewerage hole in your backyard (costs around 3000 Euros, they built a huge one (common for everybody) far away from the town and you pay the building cost annually for about 20 years. It costs the same, but you get rid of cockroaches, mosquitoes, rats etc. It's clearly a fixed asset for the building. If you demolish the house and build a new one your remote sewerage tank is still there. So who should pay, the land owner or the tenant? Don't pay it and don't worry about it. I am 99% sure the owner knows HE should pay. Just talk to him.
