The John Bolton Threat to Trump’s Middle East Policy

Post-election comments on Middle East policy last week by President-elect Donald Trump and one his campaign advisers have provoked speculation about whether Trump will upend two main foreign policy lines of the Obama administration in the Middle East.

But the more decisive question about the future of US policy toward the region is whom Trump will pick for his national security team – and especially whether he will nominate John Bolton to become secretary of state.

Bolton, one of the most notorious members of Dick Cheney’s team plotting wars in the George W Bush administration, would certainly push for the effective nullification of the main political barrier to US confrontation with Iran: the 2015 multilateral nuclear deal.

News is filtering from the USA. Trump has had preliminary discussions with Australian Diplomats. There is going to be a request for the USA to mobilize another 50,000 troops in Australia in preparation for Freedom of Navigation work in the South China Sea and as a fulcrum to South and North Korea and to contain Chinese influence.

This doesn't look like an insular USA!

Today I was listening to a correspondent on the BBC talking about the Japanese PM being the first foreign leader Trumpwill be talking to. Trump has been rather less than diplomatic about Japan ..... and this was the interesting bit ...... because they did not pay the US enough for the troops they have in Japan.

Oh Paphitis ..... what a bunch of plonkers you have in Australia ..... all cock-a-hoop about having these 50,000 US troops in the country to protect it from another imaginary threat ..... and YOU have too pay for them!!! Smart thinking Bat Man, I hope they were astute enough to negotiate a discount ?

Just had to bring this thread back on the forefront. As you all know Donald Trump has been inaugurated as the 45th President of the US.
President Trump in his inaugural speech did not diversify from his campaign speeches. Consistent ?

Time will no doubt tell.
