Anonymous, is most likely a couple of 15 year old punks in a basement.

So long as they're effective at doing their bit to harm the bad guys, that's fine.

(However, one smart kid told me that when Anonymous brought down the FBI it was no more effective than going into their lobby and tearing down one of their posters. The FBI just put up new and better posters. Maybe Anonymous have upgraded too. :) )

Apparently Anomynous is a global network of hackers. Between them, they probably have the capability to bring down entire Government networks. They have been successful at doing it in the past.

But they also target the Greek Government. They were attacking the Greek government for months back in 2010 for the heavy handed police responce to demonstrators in Athens.

Turkish Internet servers reeling under huge cyber attack

25 December 2015

Turkish Internet servers are suffering a powerful cyber attack, slowing banking services and fanning fears that it could be a politically motivated attack from abroad.

Nic.tr, a non-governmental organisation that administers addresses for websites using the "tr" domain, said Thursday that the attack appeared to be from "organised sources" outside Turkey.

The domain is used by websites belonging to Turkish ministries, commercial enterprises and banks.

Transport and Communications Minister Binali Yildirim called it a "serious" attack and asked an Ankara-based university to beef up security measures, saying they were "insufficent".

Banking sources said the attack has seriously disrupted transactions.

Experts have been unable to identify the source of the attack.

Some newspapers said it could have originated in Russia, citing fraught bilateral relations since the downing by Turkey of a Russian fighter jet last month on the Syrian border.

According to local media, the Anonymous hacking group posted a message saying it would continue to attack Turkey for "supporting the Islamic State by buying their oil and tending to their injured fighters."

:P Today's update:

Anonymous is behind those massive cyber attacks in Turkey

By Lulu Chang

It isn’t just ISIS that Anonymous has declared war against — it’s all its friends as well. The hacktivist group has claimed responsibility for the series of cyberattacks in Turkey that have taken some 400,000 websites offline, and promises to continue in its nefarious activities, as long as it believes that the Turkish government is aiding the terrorist group.

The two-week long attack is considered the most intense in Turkish history, and targeted a number of key government websites, as well as financial institutions. The campaign only grew stronger over Christmas, upon which Anonymous’ distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks resulted in the disruption of services and transactions for a number of state-run sites and banks.

“Dear government of Turkey, if you don’t stop supporting Isis, we will continue attacking your internet, your root DNS, your banks and take your government sites down,” said a voice in a video (which has now been removed from YouTube) released by the hacking group. “After the root DNS we will start to hit your airports, military assets and private state connections,” the ominous voice added. “We will destroy your critical banking infrastructure.”

Previously, Turkey suspected Russia of being behind the crippling attacks, perhaps in retaliation for the Russian jet that was downed earlier in November.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has himself labeled the Turkish government “accomplices of terrorists.” President

Barack Obama has also urged Turkey to more closely monitor its borders with Syria (apparently to no avail), and American officials have noted the country is not doing its part to stymie the oil-smuggling trade that finances much of ISIS’ operations.

“After the root DNS we will start to hit your airports, military assets and private state connections,” the ominous voice added. “We will destroy your critical banking infrastructure.”

I assume it's a bunch of Russians and maybe Kurdish refugees who migrated west in the past decade.
