One in five women in Cyprus have been subjected to physical or sexual violence.

The figure was revealed by the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS) on Wednesday, as the organised announced the start of a new campaign fighting violence against women and girls.

According to an announcement on the campaign, one in fivewomen in Cyprus have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence while 39% have been victim to psychological violence at the hands of their partner.

Additional figures presented during a Wednesday stakeholders’ launch of the new campaign, co-organised by the Ombudsman’s Office, MIGS and advertising company Contact Grey, 36% of women in Cyprus had experienced sexual harassment.

Read out by MIGS Director Susana Pavlou, related statistics also revealed new types of violence against women had also emerged including on-line violence, harassment, stalking and bullying.

Quoting a study carried out by the Advisory Committee for the Prevention and Battling of Violence in the Family, Pavlou noted 43% of women in Cyprus who had been abused by their partner and not received any outside support. Also, 28% of Cypriot women had suffered some form of abuse at the hands of their current or former husband or partner.

Also, another study, by the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family, showed 82% of the victims of domestic violence were women and girls.

Police statistic revealed 30 women had been murdered by their current or former partners in Cyprus in the past decade.

Many victims of violence are female migrants and domestic helpers, Pavlou also noted.

The message conveyed by the stakeholders’ was that there is an urgent need to prevent and manage the epidemical levels of violence against women and girls in Cyprus.

Also speaking at the event, Ombudsman Eliza Savvidou said: “Violence against women is the most barbaric and the most widely spread form of systematic discrimination and inequality women continue to experience in their daily life and which springs from historical inequalities in the balance of power between men and women”.

She said her office had been involved in various aspects of the problem and uncovered weaknesses in halting violence and supporting victims.

Contact Grey representative Lia Flourenzou announced the campaign would be centred around the phrase ‘Men say no to violence against women. I know. You know. We know. Enough’s enough’.

Would you compare domestic violence in Cyprus and Turkey?.
"30 women had been murderer by their current or formar partners in Cyprus in the past decade". 30 women in the past decade, 30 women in 10 years.

Only in 2014, 335 women were murdered in domestic violence in Turkey.

...thinking about this ruling, it has come to me, beating a wife must be legal in Turkey, how else is there any defense for a suit which claims damages from this swollen hand?

Is wife beating legal in Turkey? Is it legal in Cyprus? Where is it legal in the world? Is wife beating wrong? And husband beating is it wrong for other reasons?

Violence against women in Cyprus is one of the lowest in the EU.
You can see the map here, northern european feminists countries are the worst. 52% of danish women have reported some form of physical or sexual abuse since the age of 15, 47% in Finland, 46% in Sweden.

Do you blame them? Of course they are going to throw stones considering the treatment they receive from certain parts of the European people in all the transit countries they have crossed.

And yet, there are also great signs of humanity, especially on the Greek Island of Lesbos, where Greek Pensioners have been known to share their groceries from the plastic shopping bags. That is an incredible amount of generosity and humanity. Lesbos Pensioners getting 200 Euro per month, and themselves being below the poverty line joining hands in solidarity with Syrian mothers and sharing their food.

The video you have provided is a clear attempt to racially vilify Syrian Refugees. The racially motivated propaganda used to taint millions of desperate people is obvious.

1 in 5 according to the Women's Rights Advocates in Cyprus is not a low incidence so I wouldn't be jumping on any high horses if I were you. And to top it, you are now labeling countries with a strong feminist movement as being the top offenders as if to insinuate that it is the feminists fault for violence against women which of course discredits you significantly as a mysogynist woman hater or hater of feminists who seek equality because you yourself do not believe in that equality and yet you are still eager to slander the entire Muslim Religion. Go figure! Yes I agree that feminists go overboard sometimes, but to say that countries which lead the way in feminism as having high incidence of violence against women, sexual harassment and abuse is extremely below the belt.

Just remember to look in your own back yard first before pointing the finger. I got no problem with you pointing fingers against Turkey and understand why you would do that considering the occupation of Cyprus and politics, but to slander an entire global refugee crisis due to war devastated areas such as Syria is extremely underhanded when you target the entire 4 million of them who have been through quite enough misery.

Unfortunately, extreme right wing politics is growing on many countries from Greece, Russia, UK, France, Austria, Hungary, Germany and even the USA with that Trump idiot.

It is a very sad situation.
