The state of the village in the 1950's is likely why his father got out. In those times, for so many, the roads lead out of Cyprus to then, mostly, "Norf Lundun" .

I like it when boundaries are pushed. Cypriots (older generations) are still quite homophobic and sexist too.

Plus, young Cypriots are a very progressive and laid back bunch. They are the new bastions, and it is good to see all the old fogies and old farts on this forum squirm!

George Michael was an Ambassador to Cyprus and we should all be proud of his accomplishments in music. He was a very big star there is no doubt about it.

George Michael was an Ambassador to Cyprus - Yeah, he was proofter and that's what he was promoting Cyprus as????

Hade re, den ntrepese.

Shock horror!

Rest my case!

Don't be an idiotic homophobe. Firstly, his immense contributions were in his musical artistry.

Beg to differ about George Michael being an ambassador for Cyprus, since I suspect few of his many fans outside the Cypriot community or in Cyprus knew, let alone cared about him being Cypriot. He never sought to hide but he never seemed to play on it either, and I cannot trace he ever publically did anything to promote Cyprus.

That does not take away from his private Generosity to the UK Thalasamia institute, which helped many of Cypriot origins with that terrible condition live longer and more fulfilling lives, and many other private Charitable gestures. Nor does it mean we should not be proud of his musical acheivements, which Cypriots can be proud of, as well as for any world wide impact he may have had on LGBT issues, following his public "comming out" after his US arrest. Judging however by comments here, and those of sone the men in the funny hats and long black dresses, his impact on LGBT issues in Cyprus is not so great. More the pity. Yes attitudes are changing but they have a long way to go.

he promoted cyprus every time he traveled to the island. It was one of his favored destinations because he would be seen in Cyprus every year.

Obviously, he was connected to the island and loved it so much to squeeze it in his busy schedule. He never suppressed his Cypriot identity.

The media however, will only report on vane issues like what he was wearing, who he was seen with and what he had for dinner and other such banal matters.

Actually I beg to differ on the impact of LGBT issues in Cyprus. To actually gauge that, you will need to fuselage the opinions of the younger generations. Younger Cypriots are EXTREMELY active on FaceBook, and there seem to be no homophobic tendencies among them. Quite the opposite as a matter of fact. Young Cypriots are very open, intelligent and extremely tolerant. Probably just as much as any other western country.

You wan't find many YOUNG Cypriots on this forum, because they tend to avoid all the nonsense of the older generations. Most young Cypriots have been educated overseas and seem to be a lot more enlightened than the average person you will find here.

All we need to do is wait for all the old farts to die off! TICK TOCK!

Credibility is not something you get when a group of old farts and peasants agree with your over simplistic world views. When you're unhinged and have zero balance you don't have credibility just because a few asylum patients agree with you and your admiration for Pootin and Assad.

That has nothing to do with credibility, but being true to your beliefs does.

Would you consider good relations with Russia and China as ....simplistic ? I consider good relations with Russia and China as conducive to world peace. I think you will agree that a " cold war" does not in any way contribute to peace and stability. You have established your self as terribly naïve and ....wrong on every prediction. The war in Syria for instance, it will soon end, the rebels will be defeated and Assad will continue being the Dictator just as all other ME rulers.

There is no such thing with good relations with Russia.

A country that behaves in such a fashion is a country the world needs to stand up against.

as for China, we have excellent trade relations with China but it isn't a one way street. There are clouds on the horizon pertaining to its non adherance to UNLOS and International freedom of navigation Rights because of its annexation of EEZs belonging to other States.

Yes I believe good relations with Russia in the current environment are not possible. And that isn't because of our side. Pootin will always burn you and try to flex itself and then its on for young and old again whether over Ukraine, Syria or the future war with Iran/Hezbollah.

  Shall we ...declare war on Russia ?
Mate, I as well as you, have young ones to worry about. Putin will not be around for ever. He has shown the world over Syria that he is a leader. more so recently in not throwing his toys out of the pram like Obama did. The CIA got things disastrously wrong in the past, not least the " WOMD". Trump said this a couple of days ago.
