Sweden seizes Turkish gun-running ship

Sweden Detains Turkish Ship Laden With Explosives Bound For The Middle-East

The Panamanian-flagged Whiskey Trio, belonging to a Turkish company called Trio Shipping, has remained at the Varberg port in Halland county since Friday.

Thomas Åström, a senior official at the Swedish Transport Agency told AFP: “We are prohibiting them from leaving port, mainly for safety reasons, but also because of the working conditions for the crew.”

The alert was raised by a seafarers’ union after a Whiskey Trio crew member told it that he was not given permission to see a doctor despite being ill.

The transport workers’ union (transportarbetareförbundet) on its website decried “a rusty ship with poverty wages”, which it said was “laden with rockets and explosives”.

When questioned by AFP, the transport authority did not reveal the nature of the ship’s cargo which was scheduled to leave for the Netherlands.

The authorities did however speak of multiple breaches of safety rules, notably in the areas of fire safety and safety and rescue equipment.

Union inspector Göran Larsson, who had visited the ship, told the Aftonbladet tabloid that he was shocked at seeing the poor living conditions, including dirty and dilapitated cabins, outdated food and insufficient water points.

“When we came the crew were having breakfast. They were eating old, dry bread which they tried to toast, olives and tea. It was horrible to see,” he said.

According to Larsson the ship’s final destination was the Middle East.

“I get so worried, first they load the boat with rockets and explosives and then they are not allowed to leave. It’s fortunate we were able to help these people because otherwise you don’t know what would have happened. Perhaps they would have exploded in the middle of the sea,” he said.

The ostensible reason for detention is health and asfety violations, and the reports indicate she us a ship of shame that might take some time to put right. I do however wonder about the cargo, its origin and destination, and legitimacy.

Oh the poor Swedes - always making sure the Middle East doesn't think they are so nasty as to stop them getting their weapons.

Of course, the humane Swedes have their softly softly image to protect and of course (despite their own appalling treatment of migrants) they still only have 'health and safety' in mind.

Pull the other one, it's got bells on. (But it's balls Sweden needs.)

You made an assertion that disturbed me: "Appalling treatment of migrants in Sweden". Can you either support it with proof or take it back?

lol. good luck with that :)

Here is one 'index' for you that obviously can be written of entirely straight away because it would not seem to support GiG's claim

Yes, I can assert my opinion. Unlike others here, I didn't claim the "EU Commission" has said this (take note lying erolz).

Nevertheless, I have based my opinion on the fact that Sweden foolishly invited migrants over only to be one of the first to shut the door in their faces. I don't know how Cypriot you are but for me that is very bad behaviour.

Sweden and Denmark have moved to drastically reduce inward refugee flows, as Scandinavian countries compete with each other to shed their reputations as havens for asylum seekers.
Guardian

That's what the Swedish government did.

As for the Swedish people:

A mob of up to a hundred black-clad masked men went on a rampage in central Stockholm on Friday evening, singling out and beating up immigrants, and handing out leaflets threatening further violent attacks against unaccompanied refugee youths.
Telegraph

So unlike propaganda-spreading lying people who hurl unsubstantiated, false policy claims from the mouths, supposedly of the "EU Commission" or some other authority, my assertion is from MY OWN mouth. It's my opinion and despite that I have told you how (among other personal reasons) my opinion has been formed.

OK - happy? Am I allowed an opinion?

Hello - still getting your bigoted, anti-Greek opinion mixed up with that of the EU Commission, huh?

I have absolutely no problem what so ever with you expressing your frequently absurd and ludicrous opinions on this forum, as you have been for what 12 years now ? Longer ? The problem I have with you is how you consistently behave should anyone have the temerity to challenge such opinions.

Yeah I am really strange like that. I have this habit of accepting that what the EU Commission says in it's own press releases as being the view of the EU Commission. Some how I seem unable to first filter what they say in their own press releases through a 'Greek wash' program before accepting such. How strange. Anyway here is a link to their latest press release on the subject, just for you GiG.

http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-16-211_en.htm

It is just full of lies like their own evaluation report on Greece (no longer draft and now adopted) identified "serious deficiencies" and as a result of this evaluation report, which is (according to you) not the one that will be used, they have proposed "recommendations to address deficiencies in [Greece's] external border management" which are to be submitted to the Council for adoption. They ( the dirty bastards) also once again explicitly outlined what time frame Greece will have should these recommendations to address these deficiencies be adopted by a Committee of the Member States, acting by qualified majority (three months) and what can be done if it is adopted and Greece fails to rectify these deficiencies within that time frame (suspension from Schengen for a limited period).
