Corruption is a sad fact of life here... And the perception index could well refelct personal experience. Back in 2013 i mentioned corruption in getting through the driving test, which was the subject of ribald jokes by Cypriot colleagues. .. Now there are press reports about it, along with numerous other scandals involving eg refuse disposal, sewerage schemes etc,. The good news is that there are press reports. Press reports on corruption is good news because open discussion of a problem is the first stage of addressing the problem....the even better news are the two AGs who are actively investigsting and seeking to deal with the problems, and even better still is the success in prosecution of some alleged to be involved.

An article on research by the University of Nicosia suggests

THE 65% OF CITIZENS TO CONSIDER THE MAIN FACTOR FOR THE EXISTENCE OF THE PHENOMENON Six out of ten Cypriots believe that corruption is largely responsible for the economic situation of the place, and believe that our society promotes the phenomenon.

The complaint filed on Thursday "appears to be the largest email scam that I've seen," said Tom Brown, a former Manhattan federal prosecutor who is now managing director of Berkeley Research Group's cyber security practice.

The scheme at issue in Thursday's lawsuit took place from August to September and was identified after a Cyprus-based bank identified suspicious transfers, authorities said.

According to the lawsuit, the perpetrators carried out the scam by creating a fake email address that resembled that of one of the company's vendors in Asia.

The remaining $25 million was laundered through other accounts in locations including Cyprus, Latvia, Hungary, Estonia, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Hong Kong, authorities said.

...fraud is a complicated thing. Good on the Cypriot Bank, (in this case) eh?

Many years ago I was invited by the father of a young Greek student studying in London and staying at my house. The father visited me in London and politely asked that I look after his young son, a bit of a tearaway, and assist him should he be in need of any help, financially mostly.

He remained in London for about 4 years and on his return to Greece, a small town near Serre in Northern Greece, I took the invitation extended to me and visited the family. A well to do and rather wealthy professionals in this small town.

A few days later the Greek father and I were playing Tavli on the veranda of his luxurious apartment located on the second floor, when a friend of the Greek father arrived , after introductions he pulled up a chair and begun watching us playing Tavli.

I couldn't help noticing that the Greek fathers young son was driving a car in the street below just aimlessly going round and round.

What on earth is E ( I will refer to the young man as E) doing driving around and around in the Mercedes, I asked? Exares, the father, who shall be now referred to as G , shouted. You luck bastard I said, momentarily ignoring the Mercedes driven by his son.

After a minute or so I asked again, G I said, why is E driving your Mercedes around and around, when suddenly my eyes catches a glimpse of a young woman walking the street and holding a tile over her head . G why is that woman holding a tile over her head, I asked inquisitively . Surely you must know he replied she is a ...lixousa, just had a baby, so for 40 days she must be under a roof !!!

We don't have this in Cyprus I said, but again his son was just going around and around in the square below.

G, what the hell is E doing driving around and around I once again asked. John for god sake man use your brain, E is having a driving test !! But he is on his own I said, where is the driving examiner I asked. Right next to you he replied pointing to the gentleman watching our Tavli game !!!
This is a true story, I swear .
