The problem is if Tim has to get a work permit, which they used to only issue if there were no locals (which now includes EU) that could do the same job.

Sounds like you have just had a proposal Tim. :D

I was offered Cypriot citizenship many years ago, my Dad told me to decline, he said they would probably make me serve in the National Guard. :(

You don't have to have Cypriot citizenship to serve in the NG, many kids have served without it, I know quite a few cases.

I'm sure they would accept non-citizen volunteers but I didn't want to. I always got an exit permit when I went to Cyprus although it wasn't really necessary, I was told that I could be delayed at the airport if they saw someone with a Greek name leaving without a permit.

If you lived here you would have to do it, Cypriot or not.

The interesting point is that I am self-employed and while I physically work in Cyprus, virtually all of my clients are abroad, so I wonder if I meet the criteria for a residence permit for those having adequate income from outside the Republic. We will probably only really find out if it happens.

Precisely. Those who say nothing will change frankly don't have a clue. Under EU regulations, you can only employ a non-EU national (which the British will be if the UK leaves) if there are no EU nationals available to do the job. Nothing will change for those retired people whose income is above the relatively low level of income from outside the Republic needed for a residence permit (I think it is currently about 6,600 euro annually), provided they are not working or running businesses here. For the rest of us, it will be a whole new ballgame.

Funnily enough, I was talking yesterday about this very matter to a London-born second generation Cypriot who now runs a business in Limassol . It seems he has done his full time in the National Guard, but even so certain restrictions apply to him as a 'Charlie' (e.g. he can't inherit his dad's land) - I think it has to do with him keeping his British citizenship as well. It seems pretty unfair.

I can tell you for sure that this is nonsense. Having British citizenship does NOT prevent you inheriting.

If he is a Cypriot he can have his fathers land end of.

There some other conditions that applied to non Cyprus born Cypriots but this is not one of them. In fact you were Cypriot enough to do NS, but not Cypriot enough for the other benefits.

Correct. We inherited my father's property in the occupied territory. It took several years but eventually the property deeds were transferred to us. His Will was drawn up in England, it was not a Cypriot Will.
