Does anyone know much about a code 1A stamp is and how you acquire one ,

It's my understanding that the 1A stamp is something that is issued at border controls to non eu family members if they do not have a visa to enter as long as they can prove they have family in the eu country by other means them they can get the stamp and that permits them to either 2-6 months , can anyone confirm or expand on that please
