Giving away ................

Postby skyvet » Fri Sep 23, 2016 6:48 am

I am offering an LG HDD/DVD recorder receiver system, complete with surround sound system totally free of charge, but it does need a repair. It comes with remote control handset, operators manual, and all relevant supply leads.
The fault on the player means it won't turn on when trying to play a dvd, and continually displays a "please wait" message. The system is a few years old now, but prior to this fault it worked fine.
It is offered FREE OF CHARGE to anyone prepared to collect it from Oroklini (I could meet you somewhere in the village if you don't know the area) on these understandings:-

1. The system requires repair work.
2. I accept no responsibility for any costs/charges relating to it's repair.
3. You must collect from Oroklini

Please "PM" me initially if you're interested and I'll reply with my phone number. If nobody is interested, and I haven't had any replies within 7 days, the offer will be withdrawn and I'll dispose of it

What is the exact model? Did you try to repair it and couldn't, or you didn't bother?

Just put it outside your gate and it will be gone in half an hour.

Some basic things if you want to try to fix the problem…

1. Push and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds to invoke a hardware reset.

2. You can download newer firmware from the support site and install it. It will have to be burned to a CD though (.ISO file) to execute.

http://www.lg.com/us/lgeai/drivers

3. Open the cover and clean the laser with a cotton ear-bud. With the cover open you’ll also be able to inspect for any foreign obstructions, bloated capacitors, etc.

And that's as far as the basic home repair goes. :)

To "Get Real" :-

Thanks for your advice, but as an old wrinkly, your suggestions are probably a little outside my capabilities. I have now bought a new machine anyway, so I'm merely trying to do a favour for someone who can make use of it or repair it themselves if they're not not a technophobe like me!

To "Sotos"

As far as I can tell from the handbook, the model is an LH-RH361SE and the surround system is model LHS-36SE5S. I know it was very expensive when new, and it plays dvd's. cd's, picture files etc as well as being a dvd recorder. As I said to GR in the reply above, as a technophobe I can't be any more informative than that I'm afraid.

Apart from the obvious defect, it still looks very "sexy" and is in very good condition aesthetically.

Newer firmware doesn't always work. I tried to install a newer version for my Samsung TV (via a USB stick) the other day and it wouldn't accept it.

Did you get an error message? What does "wouldn't accept it" mean?

I don't remember the exact message, but the same method worked when I installed the 2013 update, but the 2014 update was ignored... the message was something like 'no update file available'.

The process is described in this video:

I suspect a USB problem. Delete the firmware from the USB, scan your USB for errors, defrag it, copy the firmware again from the support site and try again.

No, the USB is in good condition. I also tried more than one USB, and I also tried the other USB ports on the TV. In all cases the USB was recognized immediately.

The problem is probably the update file itself. I have the feeling it's a dodgy one. Probably Samsung hired some Turkish programmer...

Anyway... I don't really need the update... the TV is OK.
