Not really. It's personal choice. Or, if you are emphasizing the collectiveness of the group which, I guess, I was (being 'Paphitis' + 'coalition' = they do - or, echoing his use of 'we' + do).

Should I use a singular or a plural verb with a collective noun?

A collective noun refers to a whole group as a single entity but also to the members of that group.

A collective noun names a group of individuals or things with a singular form. Examples of collective nouns are: faculty, herd, team. There are collective nouns for people, animals, objects, and concepts. The use of a singular or plural verb depends on the context of the sentence. If one is referring to the whole group as a single entity, then the singular verb is best: The school board has called a special session. When a group noun is used with a singular determiner (e.g., a/an, each, every, this, that), singular verbs and pronouns are normal: The team is away this weekend; they have a good chance of winning. There are other contexts where the plural verb is more natural: My family are always fighting among themselves. When the individuals in the collection or group receive the emphasis, the plural verb is acceptable. Generally, however, in American English, collective nouns take singular verbs. In British English, collective nouns are more often treated as plurals that take plural verbs.

It's not just my Coalition. It's yours too. And it's even Get Real's as a British, Australian and Cypriot citizen. All 3 countries are members of the Coalition led by the US.

For an intelligent person, you should see a very stark difference. Coalition is far less effective than Russian Airstrikes because of the rules of engagement they operate under. Russia and the regime are far less discriminating. Coalition do not do war crimes.

And it is the Coalition that is leading the fight against ISIL. There has been little to almost zero from Russia or the regime.

I mean seriously folks. The Russian Military is a big huge joke in NATO and Pentagon circles.

Just by watching them in action, the reality is that their entire Navy and Air Force will be wiped out in 2 weeks if they had all out war with the Coalition. They are just playing bluff because they know that western militaries have a lot more accountability with everything including the rules of engagement. If the Coalition did the same thing as Russia and the regime in Mosul or Raqqa, there will be hell to pay!

You think the Pentagon are not having a big laugh behind closed doors?

They sent in an aircraft barge that burns more oil than the planes burn in fuel and 2 aircraft went over the side. The only way this can happen is when the pilots completely missed the arresting wire. Pilots are trained to abort landings if the speed is wrong, they are off the glide path or unstable. It's instinct! Either the Russians are unprofessional, not well trained, or friggin drunk on vodka to go off the side because they missed the touch down Zone to grab the arrested wire. That is literally unheard of.

The coalition is a toothless old dog !!
Regime change is what the USA and Britain wanted. Too fucking late now. Aleppo has fallen, thanks to Russian intervention.
Let the Syrians sort it out, the current dictator is as good as any one else in the ME, not least the Saudi Arabia bastards that the coalition supports.
Incidentally, the Saudis are considering very seriously allowing women to ....drive. For FS man , is this the nation that we support !!!

Paphitis, please mate, accept that the west has made a dreadful error in supporting anti Assad jihadists.

What you call toothless is a respect for International Law, humanity and the respect for life.

Coalition has rules of engagement. Break them, and it's jail time! As a war criminal!

Coalition isn't toothless. We just don't use our teeth to eat babies and civilians!

We follow Geneva Conventions and the rule of law.

In Mosul and in Raqqa, we will take our time and do it the painful and slow way with a lot of caution because we value our soldiers and we value the citizens inside those cities and need them on our side.

And Russia, or the Regime are not welcome. Any interference with our Ground forces will be an act of war!

And sorry Milti, there are a few things you need to understand.

The Coalition is in a different league to Russia. That much is evident even to an idiot.

In a war NOBODY follows GC, there is only one rule in war, to defeat the enemy at all costs.
Russia was invited to Syria by the LEGITIMATE government of Syria.
The West fucked up in Libya, same in Yemen and much more in Syria . It wasn't because the West was so terribly keen in introducing democracy , if democracy meant so much why not insist that the barbaric Saudi Arabia regime is toppled !!

And to prove how ineffective Russia and the Regime are:

The Israeli Air Force bombed the regime's biggest Air Base in Damascus and destroyed aircraft, S300/400 missiles, runways, aprons and taxiways. In other words, they turned a Syrian Air base into glass.

That's Israel that did that all by itself and all Russia could do is report it to the Aecurity Council where any resolution will get vetoed!

And those S300/400s didn't even have time to acquire targets and launch.

The Israelis don't have the same rules of engagement as the Coalition either. Neither do the Saudis.
