Not much good if you are in the middle of a bunch of Jihadis!

 He said that? :?

Another gem to add to his vast collection of utter stupidities! :?

Paphitis, I hope you’re not feeding on bamboo shoots because that’s only meant for koalas you know…

Don't be such a moron!

If you were a Cypriot in NZ and you got yourself into trouble you got no chance of getting consular representation. They would have to come from Australia. If you were in South Korea they would have to come from Japan.

You work it out for yourself.

If you had a US Passport, you would be surrounded with consular support, plus they have the power to make things pretty tough for so many countries which means they can bargain or even blackmail countries if necessary.

Also, if you have an Australian Passport you can go straight to a US or Canadian embassy because of some bilateral agreement whereby these countries are obligated to extend assistance to its citizens.

Let's say there was a war in Cyprus or anywhere! Australian citizens get evacuated by military aircraft.

If there was a war in Australia, Cypriot Citizens are stuffed!

I friggin guarantee you that if you got into trouble in an overseas country you will be pulling out the Aussie passport because the Cypriot one is useless in comparison. Aussie Government would have lawyers and consular staff everywhere and can pull the strings.

Plus there are a shitload of embassies everywhere. There is even one in Cyprus for crying out loud.

It would have done in Mumbai a few years ago when a Cypriot was killed because he was travelling on a British passport and not a Cypriot one.

If there was no Cypriot representation in a country, Cypriots could go to the representation of any EU country, lots of those about.

I would probably agree with you on that.

A US or British passport wouldn't be the one to have on your person in such circumstances. It would be better to have a Cypriot passport, or a Malta passport or something like that. Still no guarantees though.

Stop talking shit!

When the shit hits the fan and you are in dire trouble in a foreign land you will be asking to make phone calls to the British and Australian Embassies and you will be singing the the British and Australian Anthem and begging them to save your hide.

Chances are, a Cypriot Embassy with its 3 staff will be a long distance call and they will leave you to rot!

I don't know which EU countries will offer representation. I was told that only Greece may offer representation and even then there is no obligation.

Cant imagine the UK or Germany offering Cypriots representation and consular protections.

Having said that, Australia and Canada have bilateral consular agreements. Canadians are able to walk into an Australian Embassy and Australians into a Canadian Embassy. Not sure if they offer the full services though.

Because of this I always make a point of carrying Cypriot documents and leaving Australian documents behind at the hotel when in certain countries. But if I need consular services then I would contact the Australian Embassy because it is probably one of the most powerful Foreign Affairs diplomatic Corps on the planet and they would be more likely to help me when in need. I would try a Cypriot Embassy too but I doubt they are as thorough or more capable than Australia's diplomatic channels.

Not to mention the fact that the Cypriot Authorities probably won't do anything and tell me to contact Australian Embassy anyway. They will do anything to wash their hands and not loss off other countries whereas Australia will even make threats and call that countries ambassador in if shit hits the fan.

When you need to get things signed, or witnessed, I was told the Greek Consulate is ok. I asked them if the Italian consulate was ok because he is someone I know personally, and they said no.
