What's your favorite bottle of Red?

Postby CrookedRiverGuy » Wed Feb 22, 2017 12:42 pm

Cyprus has many good wine makers. I usually shop a little here and there, finding some good wines and some that are "just OK". However, I never settled for anyone in particular. Most probably there are too many yet to try out.

Anyone has some recommendations on a good buy? I would be happy if you could suggest Brand name, Price and where to buy. How much do you see quality vary by production year, by the way?

Over many years of enjoying red wines I must confess that most Cypriot bottled reds are of similar taste and quality. Years back I used to follow the late George Lanitis column in, I believe the Cyprus mail. All recommendations that he made I went out and bough, each tasted average and not that much different from Othello. Do not go by fancy labels, stick to basic wines at much lower prices.
My favourite Cypriot wines are those produced in villages up and down the island, I have given up
buying fancy label wines and stick to Olympus, Othello, and a few other reds at similar prices.
Cyprus does not produce world class wines but drinkable wines.

Cypriot wines would look only pale compared to Italian and French wines.

1. Chianti Classico + Rizerva + Organico
2. Montepulciano
3. all ports of Tuscany (Toscana) +
4. Beaujolais

all accompanied with Cheddar would say the last word.

As a bottle a day, two on Sundays and bank holidays, more when on vacation I can, after some fifty years of drinking wine, say that the finest wines in the world are the the French clarets, alas some of the classified 1cr Premier grand cru classe, are beyond my budget, I had the pleasure years ago of having some of the finest Bordeaux wines not least a Petrus.
Take a look at this ...cheap wine !!

I have a lot of experience in this field.

Not brilliant but of a consistently good quality is - sorry, can't spell it - ayios enoufrious. Also I have found Othello Cellar quite palatable. One man's meat and all that though.

Have you tried the Reds produced by the Tsangarides Winery in Lemona ? Well worth the money , around 5/6 Euros and widely available.
