Kyprianou is already in China preparing the ground:

European Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou is visiting the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong Monday to Saturday this week to discuss avian influenza (bird flu) and product safety of Chinese imports.

Kyprianou will represent the European Commission at the "International Pledging Conference on Avian and Human Influenza" in Beijing on January 18.

Commissioner Kyprianou will also visit a medical laboratory specialising in avian flu and SARS, and the infectious diseases ward of a hospital.

Kyprianou said that improved surveillance, transparency and technical co-operation within the region and with the EU is key to winning the battle against bird flu and said that the EU was "ready to play its part" in financial support.

At the "International Pledging Conference on Avian and Human Pandemic Influenza" in Beijing on 17-18 January 17-18, the European Commission will therefore pledge its external response to the threat of avian flu.

The conference’s aim is to mobilise and co-ordinate the financial support from donors to boost the response to avian influenza and potential flu pandemic at the national, regional and global level.

The lion’s share of the pledged monies will support integrated national response strategies in third countries in addition to the considerable own efforts these countries are making.

Commissioner Kyprianou will formally announce the Commission’s pledge, coming from the external relations budget and the European Development Fund, on behalf of the Commission.

During the conference, the Commissioner will stress the need for increased monitoring of high-risk areas, surveillance of domestic poultry and wild birds, and bio-security in poultry farms.

He will underline key measures to be taken in terms of networking of laboratories, co-operation between veterinary and public health authorities, exchange of information between countries, and contingency planning – all of this converging towards a co-ordinated response at regional level and with other regions of the world including the EU.

Product safety

Kyprianou will visit a toy factory and address EU-China co-operation in product safety, in particular regarding toys, safety, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Chinese authorities.

"Nearly half of the dangerous consumer products found in the EU are imported from China," said Kyprianou.

"This has to change, and we are joining forces with the Chinese government and industry to better protect European and Chinese consumers."

During his visit Commissioner Kyprianou will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese governmental agency for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).

The MoU was initialled in Brussels on November 11, 2005. It aims to establish better communication and collaboration between EU and Chinese authorities on general product safety, food safety, and sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) issues.

These will also be discussed during his visit to a Chinese toy factory and meeting with Chinese and European industry.

China, Greece Call for Early Settlement of Cyprus Problem

Postby Sotos » Thu Jan 19, 2006 9:12 pm

China and Greece expressed the hope on Thursday that the Cyprus problem will be solved in a fair, sustained and pragmatic way at an early date on the basis of the relevant United Nations resolutions.

In a joint statement, the two countries also expressed their support for UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

Any measure taken by the UN Security Council and the international community should be beneficial to the settlement of the problem, the statement says.

The Joint statement on the establishment of the all-round strategic partnership between China and Greece was issued during Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis' three-day official visit to China at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao.

After his arrival in Beijing on Thursday morning, Karamanlis has held talks with Wen Jiabao. Chinese President Hu Jintao, top lawmaker Wu Bangguo and top political advisor Jia Qinglin are expected to meet with him.

still this goes on.
let me add that with the record china has in human rights, its higly contested if it will care about our own.
not only the chinese people themselves...there is also thibet if i mind remind you.
so may i have my reservations about the new-to-be superpower.

but dont worry we can wait for the next one. Brasil could be more helpful. besides all cypriots support brazil in the world caps. we have a tradition of good relations.

just an ethical question.
knowing the way china dealt with thibet.
and assuming that chine would help us (huge assumption)

should we accept the help of an invador and ethnic genocide?

arent we going to be doublefaced to the people of tibet?

i was wondering to whom the "pezei moutsio" refered to in another thread. now i know.
thanks.

as for the "scrubbing toilets"... well... if we consider chinas attitude to the human being. i would be lucky if i scrub toilets if china indeed becomes the super-power.

yet you didnot answer my question.
would it be right from our side to receive help from an invador?

just an ethical question.

Since when what is ethical matters to you?

I thought you said that insisting on human rights, democracy etc is useless. So should we insist on these principles or not?

oh Piratis stop! You are worse than a turkish nationalist.

I entered a turkish forum the other day, and I tried to sell them some of your thesis about human rights and legality, and I was inadvertently called "rumlara satilmis kopek" and the abuse was unbearable so I left the forum.

Please, stop the abuse.
