Hello All,
As a matter of interest, the UK television uses the PAL system. What system does Cyprus use?, is it compatable with UK televisions if they are imported with personal belongings. The same question applies to UK telephones, ( BT ) can they be used in Cyprus.
Regards,
Whirlybird. |

I am almost 100% sure they are the same as in the UK.
they are PAL in CY too, same voltage.
No difference in the phone systems either. |

UK phones are no problem; older TVs will need to be chipped if you wish to watch local TV, but not for DVD/satellite.

Cyprus uses the PAL G standard whereas the UK uses PAL I.
The standards are similar but if your TV doesn’t cover both you will need it to be ‘chipped’ to get sound (the picture works okay).
However, this is only relevant if you want to watch Cypriot TV channels – if you are going to get a big dish and watch Sky you can bring your old TV and it will work fine.
Personally, I’d sell your old set on e-bay and buy a new one here.
Telephone systems are identical as are the electrical sockets and mains specifications. |

My biggest mistake was bringing my TV to Cyprus which I spent alot of money buying 3 years back, a nice dolby surround sound only to need it chipped. Dolby surround sound....pfff, the sound quality has been dumbed down so much that I am thinking of getting it converted back and buy a cheap one for terrestrial and use the good one for satelite and DVDs.
You'll also need your video chipped if you are bringing it over. I guess it will cost around £35 to get a tv and video done. |
