Suggestion for forum

Postby Hristos » Thu Sep 25, 2003 4:46 pm

Considering this forum is brand new and needs people, it's not wise to have over 10 different sub-forums. Constructive suggestion: Cut the number down to 2 or 3 to give more life to the forum, and the when need will be, then divide into sub-forums to ease the traffic.

Sincerely yours,

Hristos.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Which 3 forums do you think we should keep?

Just group up the forums of the same category together. For example: Cyprus Problem, Cyprus and the EU, and Politics and Elections, should go in one forum called POLITICS & THE CYPRUS QUESTION (or something like that). Likewise, the general forums should just be one forum called GENERAL. Etc. etc. Just be logical!

By the way Ari, what happened to the forum during these past few days?

ok, during the weekend or next week I will see if we can make the forum less :) I am pretty sure the forum script will allow us to do this without loosing any posts.

By the way Ari, what happened to the forum during these past few days?

The server of the forum changed. The new server is located at Dallas, Texas 8) Also the version of the forum script was updated to the latest one. If any of you notice any problems let me know :)

I know I'm new here but I'd love for this place to become a really busy forum with many members, cutting the categories down would go someway to achieving this. Existing posts can of course be moved to these new categories. To do this you just click on the 'moderate this forum' link and then you get a new box to move the existing posts. if you need any help PM me on this board!

Thanks,
Eracles

Hello and welcome eracles.

I was thinking to do what Hristos and you suggetsed for some time now but I was postponing it.

I guess I should devote some time to improve cyprus forum in a couple of ways, like submitting it to some more directories and optimize the code for the search engines.

Less forums

What do you think about this scheme:

1)General Chat
Combining "General Chat", "Jokes and Enigmas", "Entertainment", and "Sports" forums.

2)Classifieds
Combining "classifieds" and "Meet New People" forums.

3)Cyprus Tourism
I want to keep this as a separate forum, even if it has very few posts.

4)Politics
Combining everything under the "politics" category

5)Announcements
Just for announcements, this forum is not supposed to get trafic anyways.

What do you think? Thats 5 forums instead of 12

That's a lot better - but how about mixing general chat with politics for the moment and then as hristos says, when things develop further...split them then. This would have an even more powerful effect.

I run a site and for ages I didn't hit the search engines at all. Then i exchanged links with some other similar sites and the results were pretty much instant. Google uses links on other sites to 'score' your site. Mind you you're 4th on a search for 'Cyprus forum' which isn't bad!

Like i said if you have any probs moving the posts or anything else give me a shout.

Mixing general and politics i think it will be a bit too much. I agree that it seems better to have fewer more active forums, but some of the beauty of these kind of forums is that you can have different categories and forums to organize information better.

4th place is not bad, but is not that great either considering that you where searching for "Cyprus forum" keywords that appear in both the domain name as well as the title. The reason its not comming first, as you said, is that the number of incoming links is not that great, and google relies heavily on this. (it comes first at http://www.alltheweb.com/ )

I don't think I will have any problems joining the forums, but thanks for offering your help. I really appreciate it :)

The problem is not joining forums, but spliting them later on. E.g if I combine General and Politics and later on I want to split them, how will I do that? I will have to check each post separetly to decide which goes where ...

I reckon it will pay off to mix them in the short term - it's an option, but I understand your not wanting to mix them - pleasant conversations mixed with full scale riots

Most people wouldn't bother because if the forum is busy those old posts will be so far back in in pages it wouldn't really matter.
