You confused citizenship with ethnicity ;)

Just to define and explain

Nationality is the status of belonging to a particular nation by birth or naturalization. I.e. Cyprus

However

Ethnicity or cultural background is a social construction that indicates identification with a particular group which is often descended from common ancestors. I.e. Greek

Therefore I am a Greek that comes from Cyprus.
Different nation but the same ancestors
That is why there is a bond there that a different nationality can’t break

Folks

I dont want to turn this into a political arguement.

Sotos

Its nothing to do with Greek ethnicity. Its about the flying of an independent, legally recognised nations 3rd party flag at at sporting event between 2 other nations.

Do you think you will see Scotland or Wales flags at England games during the world cup? I dont think so. Ethnically they are the same, politically they are closer (as there is only one government for the UK)

Greek goddess i am not saying that no one should be proud of their roots of course they should. Thats exactly what they are, roots which grew many, many years ago. There is un doubtledly a closeness between Greece and Greek Cypriots that is not in dispute, but i can't understand at a game between Greece and Australia why someone would go with a Cypriot flag? It is not pertinant with the game itself.

Would you see a Barcelona flag at a Villareal v Seville game ? or a Bolton Wanderers flag at a Chelsea v Middlesborough game?

So why a Cyprus flag at a Greece game? Sorry cant see the logic behind it personally and i am sure if you asked most other non Greek or Greek originating people then they would not see the logic either.

Is it a Greek genetic thing?

The Scottish are not English. The Barcelonians are not Sevillians. But Greek Cypriots are Greek ;) So you see there is a difference from the examples that you gave. You should think Greek Cypriots are as a subset of Greeks like English are a subset of British. Thats not very good example but I can't think of a better one now :P

I'm afraid we will have to agree to dis-agree. The reason that you cant think of a better example as there probably isnt one.

What i am saying is that politically Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales are all recognised as the UK. Not one have an independent government.

Greek Cypriots are not Greek, they are Cypriot first and foremost, with Greek ancestry.

The situation with Cyprus and Greece is unique as is the situation in the UK. The situation in the UK is even more confusing. You can have Scotland, England, Northern Irleland and Wales taking part in World Cups, european champions League, but represent the UK in the Olympics???

Jeez another can of worms opened.
