i will disagree with you kal. the cypriot flag is just fine...especially if you compare it with the stupid flag of the anan plan...

Cyp, what was the flag of the annan plan? Can you point me in the right direction?

Incidentally, the main problem I have with the Cypriot flag is putting yellow on white – makes it very hard to see! (And in heraldry it's just not done!)

a gc journalist who has been in favor of the NO vote , used to call it a towel  . even though i disagree with a number of things he sais , i do agree on this one

thats the flag
http://www.hri.org/docs/annan/Flag_and_Anthem.html

i mean look at it. it means absolutely nothing.

the funny thing with the cypriot flag is that the gcs came to love it especially after 74 , it was designed by a tc. to be honest i like it. its cyprus with the peace symbol. but if we are going to change it , we could find sth better than that.

Well I can see where they're going with this...

The blue stripe at the top is Greece, the red stripe at the bottom is Turkey, the gold band in the centre is lifting the gold colour currently used by Cyprus on its existing flag. This says: we have Greeks and we have Turks, but above all we are Cypriots. I can follow the logic, being a designer. Does it look like a towel? Yes, but no more than any other flag. Well, perhaps a bit more. Okay, quite a lot more.

The reasoning behind my proposal is to lift the dove of Aphrodite from the seal of Cyprus, combine it with a larger and more impressive laurel wreath (for this exercise I have lifted this from the UN flag. The blue field is for the sea. The gold laurel wreath symbolises peace, but also quite deliberately lifts themes from from the UN and the EU flags. With the white dove of Aphrodite at the centre, it suggests that Cyprus wishes to be seen at the heart of both Europe and the UN. The theme here is appeasement and integration ito the international community. You will note that there is no direct link to either Greece or Turkey – I think this would be a big mistake, as all it does is try to please everybody, but ends up pleasing no one.

The Cypriot government is letting its own people down by allowing the display of the Greek flag in any official position.

Thats part of the constidution kalahari. In fact prohibiting the display of Greek and Turkish flags in Cyprus in many official buildings (e.g. schools) would be unconstitutional and illegal! Isn't this amazing?

Unfortunately the constidution that was forced upon us is one that divides the people and create conflicts. This was something that was made intentionally by those that created the Cyprus constidution (and again those that designed the Cyprus Constitution are not the Cypriots!!!!!!!!! )

The blue stripe at the top is Greece, the red stripe at the bottom is Turkey, the gold band in the centre is lifting the gold colour currently used by Cyprus on its existing flag. This says: we have Greeks and we have Turks, but above all we are Cypriots.

No, this says: "Now partition is official. There are Greeks on one side, Turks on the other". Fortunately the Annan partition plan, which would have made the division and conflicts 100 times worst than with the 1960 constidution, was rejected.

Kalahari "Please get used to it Cyprus – while many of you may have a Greek heritage, you are not Greek. You are Cypriot. This is not going to change! "
This one of the greatest misconceptions that a lot of foreigners have.
We don't only have a Greek heritage but we also Greeks living on the island of Cyprus since the ancient years.I point out that we consider ourselves and we are proud of the fact that we a purer strain of the Greek nation. Other Greek people live on other islands that currently belong to the Greek State.
We tried to unite with Greece in the past but because of many reasons we failed to do so. However, the island of Cyprus is an independant republic having a major ethnically group;the Greeks(82%).There is also a minority of about 18%- the Turks( a number of them having Greek origins). And there are three other small minority groups;the Armenians, the Maronites and the Latins(this small group is of various origins and its main characteristic is their Roman Catholic religion).
All of the above groups are citizens of the Republic Of Cyprus and therefore Cypriots as far as their citizenship is concerned.
"This is not going to change! "

I agree with Kalahari here. If Cypriots want to remain Slaves then fair enough but do not complain that you want Turkey to leave the island when you have no problem leaving Greek symbols in Cyprus. EIther both Greek and Turkey go home or None of them.

I found the flag designed by Kalahari quite nice and professional! Also the flag in the Annan was not bad either!

Constitution can change and get updated in accordance with International Laws and Norms. This is not a problem!

I have no problem seen the Greek flag provided that the Turkish flag is also there! I mean it always goes to both sides!

Antreis The Cyprus republic founded in 1960 is an independent republic . When you says independent it directly means that you are a separate nation as well.

Also the Lithuanians used to be russians but not any more now they are a separate nation according to international Law!

Does Cyprus execrise control in Greece?

Does Greek exercise Control in Cyprus?

How can anyone claim that Cypriot nation is a part of the Hellenic Nation when the Cypriot culture and the Greek culture are not the same.

Cyprus Flag

Postby Limassolean » Sat May 20, 2006 2:34 pm

We do not have a national anthem! Thats is a shame!

But we have a national flag.

We should ALL respect it and leave all other flags to be displayed by their nations..

Why are we displaying other peoples flags?
