Planning our move - what to do with the dogs

Postby Gilbert Ostlethwaite » Mon Jun 05, 2006 3:37 pm

Hi

We're in the early stages of planning our move to Cyprus and we're wondering what to do for the best for our two nine year old Staffies. We're worried about how they're going to cope with the marked change in climate (they'll probably be knocking on 10 by the time we finally move). Obviously we want to bring them, but we have family who would give them a good home if we had to leave them behind. I would like to hear from people who've brought dogs (particularly older dogs) from the UK and how the dogs coped with the change.

Regards
Gilbert

They will love the Marble floors....... lovely and cold and will just sleep all day. Make sure you muzzle them if you take them out for walks in case they pick up any poisened food which is left out by locals to kill vermin and cats !! They are not too keen on pets in Cyprus.

how are they in the summer in the uk? If they are not so fond on the heat there, then im sure they wont enjoy it here, i had a friend bring an older dog out and sent it back a year later, it just wasnt fair on it, they will love the nice cold floors as betting guru said and in the summer you will have to walk them at night and early morning when it is cooler my mums poor dogs cant even bare to put their paws on the pavement when the sun is out.

I know of people that have successfully brought dogs from the UK.

However, on balance I would say that if you have good homes for them there that would be the best option.

There are plenty of free dogs available here that are more used to the conditions.

Hi I brought my dog over in the winter 3 yrs ago as I was advised that this would be better than bringing him in the summer (so he got used to the build up of heat gradually). He was fine! I did have a shock when he appeared to get "mange" on his elbows - I rushed him to the vet who laughed and said it was "cyprus elbow" a bald patch caused by laying on tiles rather than carpet!

Hi,

I brought my 3 dogs over to Cyprus and they love it. I don't know how you could bear to leave them, I couldnt. Its a bit of a pain organising everything, but I have my dogs here now and wouldn't change a thing I did.

You need to also weigh up the cost of transporting your dogs, when considering bringing them, against their age. Most animals adapt very quickley new surroundings and condtions. If you bring them I am sure they will be fine.
