Olympic Summer Camp, 26 July - 3 August in Agros Village

The Centre for Leisure and Sport Research and Development (Intercollege) is organizing an Olympic Camp based on the philosophy and principles of the Olympic Movement. The Olympic Camp aims to enhance multicultural interaction, global citizenship, communication and problem-solving skills. The nine-day Olympic Camp will take place in Agros village (26 July - 3 August). Boys and girls (12-16 years old) from both communities are eligible to apply for participation. The camp is supported by UNDP’s programme in Cyprus – Action for Cooperation and Trust (ACT).

The program consists of various physical activities (Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Martial Arts and Swimming). During the Olympic Camp, the participants will have also the opportunity to attend workshops and activities in a number of educational topics that aim the children’s growth and development. The topics will include the values and principles of the Olympic Movement, technology, environmental awareness and human rights. All activities will be provided on location (a local hotel in Agros). Children will also camp outside the hotel in tents for 2 days.

Personal Statement
As part of the application process, participants are required to submit a short personal statement. Preference will be given to participants able to submit proposals in written English. However, candidates may submit their personal statement in their native language. The selection committee reserves the right to accept or reject applications based on whether a BASIC level of English proficiency is shown. English as the main language of communication during the camp is part of the basic requirements for the application procedure.

The personal statement will not test the participants on their good grammar or fluency in articulating ideas in English. Rather, it seeks to ensure that all participants have a minimum of comprehensive ability in the main communication language of the camp – which is English. Therefore, the subject and length of personal statements is left open for each participant to decide. Suggested topics may include the reasons why an applicant would like to take part in the camp, the role of sports in the candidate’s life, or some thoughts on the topics of the camp (the environment, human rights, the Olympic ideals, etc.)

I don't think many children know good enough English to communicate in this language! Only English Cypriots will qualify!
