THE SAVAGES STRIKE AGAIN

Propose and discuss specific solutions to aspects of the Cyprus Problem

Sorry to barge in but in time of conflict anyone is susceptible to performing discusting and unheard of things. The Americans are guilty of genocide at Mai Lein in Vietnam, the rebelious Greeks committed genocide at Tripolitsa against the Turkish and Jewish population, the French did terrible things in Algeria and the list grows longer and longer. During the EOKA struggle in Lefkonoiko, a simple man with six children named Savvas Menoikos was tied to a tree and stoned to death by a mob of EOKA supporters because they "thought" he was a traitor.

Conflict brings the beast out of man. Europe fought two world wars within the space of half a century. However, open societies have the will and capacity to review their past and take corrective measures. That is why we see France and Germany, terrible adversaries for centuries, bury the past and march hand in hand towards a better future.

Bananiot your absolutely correct , I did not know , neither have I come across the stoning to death of a Cypriot by EOKA supporters in any of the publications that I have read.
I can not ever see the Jews and the Arabs , both with so much baggage , doing what the French and Germans did, bearing in mind that the above have a similar culture , religion and general out look to life.
You make a very important point in mentioning that open societies do tend to examine their actions and make amends where required. This is progress and it is the trade mark of the Western world.

thats why it makes no sense to divide parties in war in "civilized" and "barbarians". there is noone who is civilized during war , as history has shown too often

The independent is run by a bunch of left wing vegetarians and is not considered representative of the British people.Since you keep bringing up the civilized West as a joke let me just put down a few truths.
Millions of people from mostly the third world chose on their own free will to run from their countries and settle in our civilized world , where they have prospered , educated their off springs , were provided with free health care . immense welfare benefits , freedom of speech , freedom of choice , so any time they became sick of our civilization they could pack up and return to their native lands.None do , hordes are risking their lives to enter our world in order to enjoy what we have , law and order , justice , National Health services , opportunities for all.
Those of you who constantly undervalue our world should make an effort and return to the alternative. The truth of the matter is this.
Migration to the Western world is and has been at an all time high. We are busy here because what we offer is value for money , as a business man would say. Stop denigrating the West , get alife and praise your god for allowing you and millions of others to enter the West and prosper.
The Middle East would be living in tents had it not been for theWest's insatiable appetite for their oil. India is flourishing and China will be as rich as America in 15 -15 years. They have the West to thank.

Let me make your day once again.
Long may American continue as the superpower in the world. Long live the West , the provider of hope to the rest of the world.

why is the whole world in favor of a ceasefire , and only three states against ?

the BBC reports :

UN appalled by Beirut devastation

Mr Egeland, the UN's emergency relief chief, described the destruction as "horrific" as he toured the city....

A visibly moved Mr Egeland expressed shock that "block after block" of buildings had been levelled.

He said the "disproportionate response" by Israel was a "violation of international humanitarian law".

He appealed for both sides to halt attacks and said UN supplies of humanitarian aid would begin to arrive in the next few days.

"But we need safe access," he said. "So far Israel is not giving us access."

according to the guardian , even britain is not sure if it will join the savages or the civilized !!!

British split with Bush as Israeli tanks roll in

Britain dramatically broke ranks with George Bush last night over the Lebanon crisis, publicly criticising Israel's military tactics and urging America to 'understand' the price being paid by ordinary Lebanese civilians.

The remarks, made in Beirut by the Foreign Office minister, Kim Howells, were the first public criticism by this country of Israel's military campaign, and placed it at odds with Washington's strong support

Howells
said: 'The destruction of the infrastructure, the death of so many children and so many people: these have not been surgical strikes. If they are chasing Hizbollah, then go for Hizbollah. You don't go for the entire Lebanese nation.' The minister added: 'I very much hope that the Americans understand what's happening to Lebanon.'
