hey George,
if you're going to Queens I'd recommend Astoria in Queens. This place is known to have the most Greeks in the world outside of Greece. Some other choices with Greeks/Cypriots are Bayside, Flushing and Whitestone...but I highly recommend Astoria. There's Greek dance clubs, cafés, restaurants, groceries.. and lots of Greek people. You'd feel right at home.
As for specific places, my brother recommends Byzantio, a greek café to meet people, and also Fantasia is a place where Greek music artists come to sing. DNA is a popular dance club. I'm not sure about bars...but I'm sure if you take a trip around town you'll find one or two.
Well, good luck with your search! Hope this info is of some help. |

| In Australia, they claim that Melbourne has the most Greeks outside of Greece... |

I googled info on Melbourne and Astoria... and apparently they both have the same claim. Which one's true? I wouldn't know....but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't Astoria, although there are lots of Greeks here, the demographics are slowly changing as new people are moving in. I'd still recommend Astoria if you're going to relocate to Queens.

Here's a paper done by two NYU students on Astoria for anyone interested. |

A little belated no doubt but yes Astoria is very Greek.
Athens cafe was owned by my Cypriot uncle until a few years when he returned to Cyprus. It is still a very nice place. Also, Astoria is the only place in New York City where you can smoke in cafes and bars .
Even suburbian Bayside, Flushiong and Whitestone Greek Americans go out in Astoria mostly. |

Hi,
My name is Andri and I am married to an american and I live right outside Louisville Kentucky. I am looking for my cousin who I know studied in NY, lived in Astoria and got married and is now living in the US. I have asked my mom to ask his for his phone number but she seems to avoid doing so because he is a cousin on my father's side and you know how it goes. I have no idea how to go by looking for him. His name is Kostas but I found out he might have changed his last name. He is around 30. His dad's name is Vassos, his mom's is Persa and he has a sister named Maria. I have no other family here and I am kind of feeling alone. If anyone has any suggestions or knows him by any chance, please help me. I have no idea where to start. Thanks! |

| You can't smoke in Astoria bars and cafes, only outside their premises. Athens cafe is extremely Greek. There are so many other cafes popping up all over the place . You can spot the Greek/Cypriots. They are dressed to the nines just to go and buy groceries. They nearly all drive the top end cars (mainly Mercs and BMWs). Just keep an eye out. They are everywhere....... |

I've read a statistic that there are more Greeks in Australia than Cyprus...it would not suprise .
The last wave consisted of Cypriots in the late seventies and early eighties. Greeks are building a big presence in the business environment here. You can go out to the middle of nowhere and find Cypriots. I freaked out when I went ot Cooberpedee, an Opal mining town 100's of kilometres from woop woop and the mayor was a Cypriot.
A lot of Greeks are building substantial businesses in places like Darwin(middle of nowhere), Canberra(greeks are referred to the Jews of Canberra because they run a lot of businesses there) Cairns and Townsville but the hub of greek activity is generally Melbourne. There is a strong presence of greeks in Sydney as well roughly 270,000 I have read. but they were old stats. |
