The last town to fall to the Ottomans, and the earliest to hold out against the Seljuks and the Mongols, the city of Trabzon, with its mild climate and historical treasures, is located on the coast line of the Black Sea region of Turkey. The city has gained international recognition due to its rich history, architectural sights and its geographical location which offers a vast array of alternatives to those who seek outdoor activities such as swimming, mountain trekking or sightseeing.

Trabzon is known as the “Emerald of the Black Sea Coast”. Its history goes back to 2000 BC. However, the founders of Trabzon are unknown. It is believed that the founders of the city first came to Trabzon from Middle Asia by passing over the Caucasus. The name of the city was first cited in the Xenophon's book Anabasis as "Trapezus". On the route of the ancient Silk Road, Trabzon was situated at a very important point between Europe and Asia. Therefore, the city became a motherland for many civilizations like Milletians, Persians, Romans and Byzantines throughout the history.



Unique examples of civil architecture, such as bazaars, museums, monasteries, mosques and tombs surround the city and shed light on the legendary history of this mystical city. Trabzon, praised by visiting scholars such as Marco Polo and Evliya Çelebi, rightfully deserves special attention.

Kanuni Sultan Süleyman, who is known as Süleyman the Magnificient and is regarded as one of the most significant rulers in history by both Muslims and Europeans, was born in Trabzon and spent first 15 years of his life in this city.

There are many kinds of historical and cultural monuments still standing up in Trabzon. Furthermore, there are lakes, streams, mountains, high plateaus, which are the natural features for Trabzon. Trabzon region also offers a wealth of summer encampments in the lush mountains which surround the coast and is a superb destination for those who are interested in the extraordinary variety of wildlife in Turkey. There are many folkloric elements which signify Trabzon, such as folk dances and the local musical instrument; “kemençe”. Trabzon could be seen as a wonderful treasure which hides a rare natural affluence and a green vegetation and mystic historical monuments.

On the other hand, Karadeniz Technical University (KTÜ) which was founded in 1954 and one of the leading universities of Turkey, is situated in Trabzon. A modern port, an international airport, the free zone are the facilities supporting the tourism potential.

Football and Trabzonspor Club are the major interests and social activities for inhabitants of the city.
