Authentic Greek Food

Postby jonathan » Fri Sep 29, 2006 6:46 pm

Hello everybody, My partner and myself will be staying in Paphos for two weeks in December and were wondering where we could get authentic Greek Cypriot food in Paphos by authentic I mean cooked by Cypriots because in the uk it seems that alot of Greek restaurants I go to the chefs at aren’t Greek and because of this the food is never the same as it is at restaurants with Greek chefs. Also I have been researching my holiday and its seems like there is a similar problem in Cyprus. Its not that I have anything against chefs of other nationalities its just never the same for example you wouldn’t go to a Chinese restaurant and the chef was Indian and expect it to be the same so basically I would really appreciate it if anyone new of any decent restaurants were the food is of high standards I hope I haven’t offended anyone im not snobby its just my girlfriend is Greek so I know the difference. Also does anybody know of any good companies to go on excursions with? :)

If you have a car, the 7 St. George is supposed to be worth a try.
No menu, it's a meze type meal made up with fresh ingredients of the season.
It is in Geroskipou.

Hi jonathan,

There are a couple of restaurants in Paphos that I would eat at again - the Apomero see: http://www.paphostaverna.homestead.com/ and there's another in Apriliou 1st Street - I've forgotten its name but it's next to Aristo.

Many of the restaurants in the tourist areas cater for visitors and expatriates. If you want some really authentic food it's probably best if you hire a car and drive to one of the villages of the beaten track.

Regards,

Hi Jonathan,

The CTO have started a project called 'Vakhis' promoting Authentic Traditional Cypriot cuisine, and only 10 restaurants have been awarded certification and have been found to comply with the specific regs and quality standards of the project.

The restaurants (copied from the brochure) are:

Lofou in Lofou
Kamares in Lofou
Kazani in Lofou
Agia Anna in Agia Anna (have eaten here many times - awesome food and bouzouki & no brits in sight!!)
Mesotrato in Kakopetria
Kinyras in Pafos
Mandria in Oroklini
Voreas in Oroklini
Gonia tou anastasi in Tseri
Takis Tavern in Vouni

There is also a lovely, tradional meze restaurant in the heart of Vavatsinia run by Andreas & Maria. As you enter the village from Lefkara (go past the first restaurnts called Maria's which is always full) and enter the village. The taverna is on the right hand side just by a small layby and before you enter the narrow & twisting village roads. It is v basic ie plastic chairs but awesome view over valley and gorgeous home made meze, halloumi etc for about 6 CYP per head excl drinks.

Good Luck!

Kamares and the other tavernas in Lofou are excellent and Cypriot food is the order of the day. There are also rooms to let overnight if you eat at Costas Lofou Taverna, saves driving down the mountain road at night. Otherwise go and eat there lunch or early evening but not on a Monday when I believe all three are generally closed.

Mikri Maria in Ankara Street, Limassol (near junction with St. Andreas and Irini Streets) is another joy to eat at.

I ate in Corfu last week and the Greeks have Cypriot food but much more greasy (or should that be Greecy?)

Wish I had a Cypriot restaurant near me in Hampshire.
