WANTED: Fax machine

Postby devil » Tue Dec 14, 2004 2:35 pm

My fax machine has given up the ghost. I need to replace it, but I don't want to spend a fortune, even a small one, as it is rarely used.

Does anyone have a plain paper machine for sale (it must be in good working order)???

Do you have a PC with a modem? If so the chances are that with a little effort you could set the PC up to recieve and send faxes.

Do you need the fax to be on all the time, or is it a case of occasionaly sending a fax and occasionaly recieveing one, and you know that it is comming (if you see what I mean). If it's only for the odd occasion using the PC may be your cheapest option.

Can any modem work as a fax or is it only fax-modems? If I'm not mistaken there are some special modems called fax-modems and I thought you had to have one of those to be able to send faxes. Do you have more information on how to set up a computer to send/receive faxes?

Just about all modems that are less than 4 years or so old (and many that are older than that) will be fax modems. I believe the necessary software is built into Windows XP (and earlier versions).

For details on setting up faxing in windows xp try this link

hope that helps

Thanks for the link. I think it's mainly for sending faxes via a modem. Do you know a way to fax via ethenet card? I have a DSL service and hence an ethernet card. I was hoping to be able to send faxes with what I already have.

There is no way to fax 'directly' via your ethernet card. Of course your DSL service does not stop you using the same phoneline (with a modem) for sending faxes.

The only other option that would not require a modem (or phone line, just internet connection) would be to use a 'email to fax' gateway service. However the only ones I am aware of are subscription services. Basically these allow you to send faxes via email , where you put the number of the fax recipeient in the subject line and mail it to the gateway provider. They in turn will fax it to the number in the subject (usally transfering it as close to the recipent as possible via email and then resorting to normal fax, and incurring local call costs). These service also work for recieving fax, where you are given a fax phone number and any faxes sent to that number are coberted to email and sent to your email address.

hope that helps

The fax machine must be on 24/24 and must be capable of sending/receiving sketches for people who cannot use a computer. In any case, we don't have a free computer to put on the fax line and it would be stupid to buy a computer + printer + scanner at three times the price of a fax machine for sending/receiving one fax per week on average.

Any offers, anyone?
