Europeans do not want Turkey in EU

Benefits and problems from the EU membership.

Europeans do not want Turkey in EU

Postby Piratis » Thu Dec 21, 2006 1:40 pm

TWO OUT of ten Greek Cypriots favour Turkey's EU accession, according to the Eurobarometer report.

Although Greek Cypriots favour a further EU enlargement, only 19 per cent sees Turkey's accession to the EU as positive.

Greek Cypriots rank fourth in Europe with a negative stance on Turkey's EU accession.
Top of the list were the Austrians with 87 per cent , followed by Germany with 78 per cent Luxembourg with 77 per cent and Cyprus with 74 per cent. On average only 28 per cent of Europeans favoured Turkey’s accession.
Of those surveyed Turkish Cypriots most favoured Turkey's accession with at 78 per cent, followed by Turks themselves with 68 per cent.

What is strange is that the UK/USA media would have us believing the opposite.

Yes Piratis, I have been telling you for months now, that Turkey does not stand a chance ever getting into the EU.

Regarding the wishes of the Greek Cypriots to keep Turkey out, well, that's hardly a surprise to me also. Can we agree now, that the GC's were going to use this as "weapon", to get a better deal from Turkey, than the Annan Plan. However, Turkey may get the last laugh on the wishes of GC's, as a way to get even, by building the "Great Wall of Cyprus" to divide North and South, along the Green Line.

Not really a good day to celebrate, if you're a GC.

The point here is that "on average only 28 per cent of Europeans favoured Turkey’s accession".

This is the answer to all those that say things like: "EU regretted that Cyprus joined because it is an obstacle to the Turkish accession" and all the other crap.

When some UK/USA newspapers write some pro-Turk anti-Cypriot things you should remember that media do not represent neither the whole world nor the Europeans.

Americans dont even know where Cyprus is, let alone the Cyprus problem. So the Turks thinking that whatever America says goes out to the world, they're wrong. America tells Turkey the same kind bullsh-t that I used to say trying to get into a girls pants. The only difference is, is that I got rewarded time to time. Turkey still uses Americas pick-up lines as promises.

Very good post Issy , let me say that the vast majority of Cypriots bear no hatred towards their Cypriot brethren , as far as Turkey's European ambitions , Im surprised , if indeed the figures given are correct , that the majority of G/Cs are against Turkeys membership into EU. I for one , support wholeheartetly Turkeys efforts to become a full member of the EU and I believe that all peace loving Cypriots who care for the future of Cyprus and the well beeing of future generations to come , will support the efforts by Turkey. We live close to each other and it is to the advantage of all Cypriots that Turkey enters the most succesful ever union of nations in the worlds history.

Miltiades,
I, like you am a firm believer that we Cypriots GC and TC have much more in common with each other than we do with our mainland cousins. In all honesty my first concern is with our common homeland and would wish to see the Turkish troops go home but we must all realise that this will not happen without a comprehensive peace settlement. The entry of Turkey into the EU, if it happens and I have my doubts about that, will benefit us all. I see no reason to demonise the Turks as a people and cannot understand why some of the GC's on this forum are so irrationally, almost psychotically anti Turkish. I just dont understand how people become like that. Perhaps it comes from the education system in Cyprus?

Problem? What problem? Are you talking about the occupation of 1/3rd of our country, the ethnic cleansing of 1/3rd of our population from its towns and villages and the violations of our human rights? No, thats not a problem at all

And how are we "bad neighbors" to Turkey? On the contrary we demand that they become good neighbors and start showing some respect to the sovereignty of our country and our human rights.
