Hi,
donīt know if this is really the right place to post īcause we are thinking of living at cyprus, not only to come there for holidays. But we got to start asking somewhere
We are a couple from Germany and want to leave here as soon as possible. At the moment we are both working as sound-technicians for film and tv and got a photografic studio for private customers and companies (ads and so on). Maybe thereīs a chance to do photografic works in cyprus, too?
Additionally we do training for climbers (mostly beginners). But this is more just for fun, than for money.
Any help or information would be great.
Thx, Greg |

Hi Greg,
this is the right place to post but probably would be more helpful if you had more specific questions. I take it you are talking about the southern part of Cyprus?
Of course there are chances to work as a professional photographer. Cyprus is a country like all the others and companies, and here especially tourist industry, needs f.e. advertising. Also weddings usually need a professional photographer as these events are really big and important. But I can not tell you how the situation in this specific market is.
Re. moving there, being self employed I suggest you contact the embassy for further and exact info. Also here are useful infos: http://www.nikosia.diplo.de/de/04/Leben__und__Arbeiten/Leben__und__Arbeiten.html

Just a note on wedding photography. The Cyprus market is pretty much flooded with them and most weddings (including my own in September last year) go with people that the family know. Therefore, I'm not sure there's much of a market for a new entrant, particularly one without contacts I'm afraid.
Welcome to the nepotistic heaven that is Kypros. |

hi greg!i disagree with cannedmoose....i think u can make really good money as a photographer....there are a lot of civil unions taking place in cyprus....u can advertise ur self first in germany for germans or austrians coming to cyprus to get married.....
learn well some beautiful spots on the island that are good for taking pictures....take ur wife and friends there ,take pictures and put them in ur shop so people can see them.....u only need to make happy the first three customers....they will spread the word around about the quality of your work......some friends of mine who got married three months ago were looking for two months to find a photographer whose work they liked,so there might be a lot of them but not of high quality.
u can also go to childrens birthday parties..
but i would say that climbing has a future in cyprus...it is not that well known as a sport,so u will not have a lot of competition(cypriots are always interested in something new) in this field but most probably u will need to invest a lot of money.
u can alo apply in one of the tv stations,u never know ,they may need photographers especially the private ones |

| True sk, didn't think of the expat community. Although I stand by my comments re: Cypriots, it does tend to be who you or your family know rather than who is advertising. Also agree with you on climbing, I was amazed at how few Cypriots are into it given the rugged nature of the island. |

| my friend cannedmoose is right about the nepotism but sk makes very valid points too but after a while the cypriot community gets to know you they will use you. |

I have to say on the subject of wedding photos - I myself made the huge mistake of asking my 2nd cousin (a professional photographer) to do the photos, I ended up having an argument with him and I never got all the photos I wanted. He's still got the negatives and now none of my family are talking to him!
From now on I only go to complete strangers for any jobs I want doing, at least that way if you've got a problem you're not embarassed to tell them. |
