Poets thread

Postby Natty » Wed Mar 14, 2007 1:14 am

It's seems that many members of this forum are gifted poets, so I thought I would set up a a 'poets thread' so that members could share any existing poems they have written, or if they feel inspired enough (And I think there's plenty of drama going on on this forum to cause inspiration.. ) can come on this thread and share a new poem that might have just popped into their head....

Now as I've said before, unfortunately I don't fall under the category of 'Gifted poets' (quite the opposite actually.. ) so I won't start off this thread with one of my own poems, but with one of my favourite poems.

It's from the poet Kavafy (Who was one of many Greeks who grew up and lived in Egypt).

So here goes..

ITHAKA

As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
angry Poseidon-don't be afraid of them:
you'll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon-you won't encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.

Hope your road is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you enter harbors you're seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind-
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and go on learning from their scholars.

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you're destined for.
But don't hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you're old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you've gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.
Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you wouldn't have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.

And if you find her poor, Ithaka won't have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you'll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.

Welcome back Pete_D,
its been a while someone to see,

one of your posts but let it be,
I hope you went up to the sea,

we heard a lot about people being ill,
and lots of problems that they had to deal,

i hope you are fine in bed,
we almost think you was dead,

but thank God you are back,
posting around with your British tongue!

Style
Style is the answer to everything a fresh way to approach a dull or a dangerous thing
To do a dull thing with style is preferable to doing a dangerous thing without style
To do a dangerous thing with style is what I call art

Bull fighting can be an art
Boxing can be an art
Loving can be an art
Opening a can of sardines can be an art
Not many have styles not many can keep styles
I have seen dogs with more style then men
Even though dogs have no style cats
Have it in abundance

When Hemingway put his brains to the wall with the shot gun
That was style
Or sometimes people give you style Joan of ark had style
John the Baptist, Jesus, Socrates, Ceaser, Garcia Lorca.

I have met men in jail with style
I have met more men in jail with style then men out of jail
Style is a difference a way of doing a way of being done
Six herrings standing still in a pool of water

Or you walking naked out of the bathroom without seeing me

This forum is interesting, informative and fun,
However the posts can often get dumb.
This one ain't bad compared to the rest,
But I think that gavcarocom's threads are the best ;)

I often get mad with some of the views
But have to remember, our right to choose.
Whether we are turkish or greek or another nation,
We should try and respect not vent our frustration.

Booker prize winning material....

I would continue, but I'm afraid my best poetic material will never appear on this forum, for that is revealed only in private to someone very special ;)
