THE ARCHBISHOP has said the Church would turn over some of its property to the government to meet an older obligation to the government that had been agreed upon when the state began paying clergy wages.

Interior Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis told state radio that he had met several days ago with the Archbishop, who had told him that the Church would fulfil its commitment to transfer over land to the state in return for the government placing clerics on its payroll.

Phileleftheros reported that the total area of the transfer would be 15,000 donums, a figure Sylikiotis was unable to confirm.

“There is a discussion under way, a specific effort, to decide how the land will be given over and in what areas but I don’t have any specific evidence on that yet,” Sylikiotis said.

“I am not sure in other words about this number [15,000] that has been reported in the publication.”

The Interior Minister said that his meeting with the Archbishop took place in the presence of the Land Registry director.

Maybe all Church property should be transfered to the state? I think too much money is what corrupts the Church!

I agree with you Soto.

Church should be a humble organization of helping people. Not tons of money, running companies, driving expensive cars, and building huge expensive churches.

The Church , I believe , is the biggest landowner in Cyprus and exceedingly wealthy. The Church instilled the fear of God into people and in the process became the gratefully greedy recipient of chunks of land donated by the poor peasants believing it would alleviate some personal misfortune.

Jesus threw the money lenders out of the Synagogue. The Church should give back its wealth to the people. The gold chains they wear, the crowns, the silk clothing, the jewelled chalices, the churches as ornanate as wedding cakes...is this a true indication of Christianity????

Since you opened the subject, this seems to be happening in almost all religious establishments. I say, let the clergy men of all religions get Married, have girlfriends, or a visit to a brothel, once a week.

Maybe even, all of the above, all at the same time. Wink
