anyway, do not get confused about Copper and the word Cyprus
THE mettal "copper" got its name from the island of "Cyprus" AND NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND... trust me... we've had this discussion before and I won  |

Welcome to the forum andy re... don't get too hung up on winning arguments though, in this place, arguments are never won or lost, they just go on forever!
I second your argument about the name of 'copper', see the definition below.
In Greek times, the metal was known by the name Chalkos. In Roman times, it became known as aes Cyprium (aes being the generic Latin term for copper alloys, and because so much of it was mined in Cyprus). From this, the phrase was simplified to cuprum and then Anglicized into the English copper. |
