This is a serious question not meant to challenge anyone.
Where do you think Kasoulides got those extra votes that brought him from 3rd to 1st?
Personally I believe it was the soldiers, (about 10-12 thousands I think) that were not included in the polls and probably most of them voted for Kasoulides so they will either get almost immediately released, or released a whole year earlier. |

I don't imagine the opinions of the students abroad were canvassed for any polls. Large numbers of them were flown in and I think it was their votes which upset the pollsters' predictions. |

| I agree with Tim, the Kassoulides camp has been saying this in private the whole time. Papadopoulos bought over 4,500 Kassoulides 5,000 and Akel a little more than that. What threw Papadopoulos off was that his were the easiest flights to get on so a large number of Kassoulides suporters said Pap but voted Kas. |

The students demographic was calculated in the polls. For the above to be true it would mean that the "local students" demographic would have significantly different preferences than the "students abroad" demographic, and I don't believe that is the case.
The soldiers on the other hand is very difficult to be counted in polls. And given the very attractive offer by Kasoulides I can see how most of those 10-12 thousand of them would vote for him.
Anybody thats been a soldier and remember how we counted down 100s of days one by one can understand what I mean. At that age people really don't understand nor they care much about politics and obviously they wouldn't put anything above their immediate personal benefit. |

Piratis, i dont have the right to vote... alltho i spent the biggest part of my life here, but anyway... i followed elections closely and from what i can see, elections in Cyprus are the most transparent and fair from what i've witnessed elsewhere. People really do care, amazing... everyone behaved as it was a holiday, all dressed up etc. 
But do really ppl care?
I had many conversations with different ppl i know regarding elections and basically everyone voted based on their personal interests. NOt many ppl believed there will be a solution but instead worried about their horafkia on the north to worth millions once north becomes recognized or someone voted Christofias as he would most likely would abolish visas for russian tourists because his business was suffering etc.... |

| One serious Turkish daily newspaper suggests that the bad weather may have played a small role. The rain may have dissuaded a proportionally greater number of older people from making the trip to the polling station, and the polls showed that Papadopoulos enjoyed more support among older voters, while younger voters tended more towards supporting Kasoulides. |

I think in future ... the diaspora should receive some voting rights ... especially ones such as myself, who were born in Cyprus ... had no say in removal from Cyprus, eventually managed to return to Cyprus against the strong pressures to not upset a personal status quo ... and then to be denied a vote because I have not been resident for 6 months before the election 
Admittedly ... I would not be as familiar with the candidates' referenda as someone permanently here ... but what about the students abroad ... they also could not keep up with all the daily proposals of the candidates.
