Hi..
We are thinking of moving to Cyrpus (maybe Paphos area) from the UK, but we will have to leave our elderly dog behind. She won't travel well and we feel it would be unfair to expose her to the heat at her old age. So she will be staying with friends.
However, we feel that we would like a nice pedigree dog in Cyrpus. Are there any dog breeders around the area or is this not the done thing in Cyrpus. We realise that dogs are seen differently over there.
Any help appreciated. Thanks |

You can find many kind of dogs, but probably not the variety of the UK.
Go to this address and email them to ask them:

Its a shelter for dogs in Pahos and not breeders, but I am sure they know more than I do. |

We recently moved to Cyprus from the US and finally decided that the easiest thing to do was for us to bring a dog with us. So now we have a little minature schnauzer for a pet. From what I can tell, it's quite expensive to buy a purebred dog over here. On the positive side, our dog adjusted pretty easily to the change in climate and we also have found a very good vet here in Nicosia. Best of luck!  [/b] |

| Do you really need a 'purebreed'. Mixed breed dogs give as much love and pleasure as purebreeds and Cyprus (north and south) is awash with unwanted animals. If you could give one of these animals a good home it would be a comendable act imo. |

That's an excellent point, Erolz. I have never seen so many stray animals (both dogs and cats) before in my life. I got the schnauzer since I'm allergic to pretty much all other animals' fur...but when I see those other poor dogs, I feel more than a bit rediculous with my little pampered lap dog.  |

True - and I'm afraid that we have squirrels and raccoons running around pretty much everywhere in the US. Actually, the cats here remind me a bit of the raccoons at home - they've gotten into my garbage twice already.  |

| As suggested by some others, I say to everyone thinking of getting a dog in Cyprus that I would never buy one, I would always rescue one as there are so many unwanted dogs in Cyprus. Sometimes you can get what appears to be a pure breed but has ended up at the shelter and does not have "papers". I have a rescued (now 8 yrs old) GS X with the most superb temperment you could wish for and what looks like a pure breed pointer (cyprus hunting dog). These two dogs have been back to the UK and then returned to Cyprus a year or so ago with me. There is a proper Kennel Club in Cyprus. I have to say that I am totally against the importation of dogs like chow chow, samoyed and husky in to a hot country like Cyprus. I am just beginning to get involved with the little known Limassol Dog Shelter which has just been taken over by new management - what a task we all have in front of us. I run my own business as a dog groomer and will be assisting the dog shelter with grooming. All for now. Good Luck! |
