Αν αυτό το φόρουμ είναι για ξένους και μετανάστες παρακλώ να μετονομαστεί σε Cyprus Forum for Foreigners and Expats.

Strahd, i think this forum is for everyone not just for Cypriots or just for foreigners. If the languages allowed were Greek and Turkish then all foreigners would be locked out. And how would Greek and Turkish Cypriots communicate between them? You thought of all these?

I never said to write only in our languages, I said that it is unacceptable to be called a Cyprus forum and not beeing able to write in one of them.

The situation now is that if you write in Turkish or Greek you are told off for doing it. My suggestion is to allow us to write in our language... Otherwise as I said this forum must change name.

Well look at it this way.. if what your saying is true, it would have to be called 'Cypriot Forum' not 'Cyprus Forum'.

we must not forget the purpose that these forums are around.
and as far as i am concerned it is to increase the communication between gcs and tcs.
and at this point in time , and unfortunately if i may add , we can only communicate in english.
a good reason for us too start learning turkish , and the tcs learn greek, so hepefully our kids will not need to communicate in english.
in the meantime, it makes no sense to right in greek and turkish (not to mention that a number of times what i ve seen sth written in greek was absolutely not polite , not to mention insulting).

if you really feel the need to write in greek, there are also greek - gcs forums out there , or you can always pm the gc that you want to sy sth in greek Wink

This is a tough one – especially as I am always banging on about Cyprus being Cypriot and not GC, TC, EC etc; so I sense that hypocrisy looms.

However, having given it thought, it seems to me that for now at least an "IMPARTIAL" language must be used that the greatest majority of both GCs and TCs will understand – and this would appear to be English. Which is coincidentally lucky for me and all the other English speakers that enjoy this forum.

I understand that there is a distinct dialect of Greek that is more appropriately called Cypriot Greek. Is this correct? If so, there's another good topic for debate, which I would be happy to propose: that this dialect of Cypriot Greek should be adopted as the official national tongue.

My Greek is presently basic beyond belief – which is to my enormous embarressment – but I am working on it, honest!

Strahd , You have a very valid point in proposing either Greek or Turkish language for this forum , but you must agree that English is not not only the language of the skies but also the predominant language used in a miriad of other interacting spheres , international politics ie UN . It is a fact that many Cypriots like my self would feel at a disadvantage having to express our thoughts and project our points of view in our mother tounge that unfortunately events far beyond our control meant that we were forced to emigrate and miss out on our Greek education.I would love to speak as well , as Im sure you do, the Greek language and although have studied arduesely over the years always feel more comfortable expanding an idea in English. Besides T/Cs would much prefer for English to carry on being the Forum's method of interacting with their G/C compatriots.
