Apparently we are to stop debating the Cyprus problem because Christofias and Talat have met and it is all in hand ....
They will start negotiations in a week, and update us in 3 months .... Optimism and Hope abound!
Hey ho, what shall we play until then?
How about "Truth or Dare" ... 
What plan of action would you personally initiate the day the Turkish troops embark on those boats to go back?
And:
A resolution in favour of the displaced Cypriots going back to their respective homes; would mean what to where you currently live at the moment? |

All displaced Cypriots returning to their own (or inherited) homes would be a wonderful thing, but...........would it work in practice? For instance - work, lets say someone who worked in a government/council office in Limassol had the chance to go back to their home in lets say, Kyrenia, how would they support themselves and family? Or they owned their own immovable business - like a plant nursery or something? How would these practical things be overcome? And do you think that MOST Cypriots would embrace the upheaval or settle for compensation?

Jazz I was hoping people would share what they would personally do if a resolution came with the:
(a) Withdrawal of Turkish troops
(b) Return to rightful homes.
It's hard to speculate as you have done, on what others might do ... so I would like to hear what forumers would do themselves.
Do they have any business plans they are sitting on which they would set into motion once the Turks are gone? .... a course of study, a career change which would be more fitting e.g. purdey may stop selling weapons  .
And for those living abroad or elsewhere on the island, would they personally actually consider moving back.
Or for the rest of us, who don't in theory have to make any adjustments ... I would love to move to somewhere around Morphou Bay ... and I would be prepared for a swap.
As for career, I would do a course in post-traumatic stress counselling, become a philanthropist and help TCs adjust to their new life. Freedom can be scary.
Or am I now being too optimistic ...... |

| There are those that own or have inherited land in the occupied part. And there are those that grew up there and neither own nor have inherited anything, the latter are the bigger losers in this Cyprus mess. At least the former lot have something tangible and practical to think about whereas the latter have lost all their past and have nothing left to look forward to. Same goes for all the Cypriots who were forced by the circumstance brough on by the coup and the intercommunal conflict to leave the island. As long as any solution does not include these people and their reinstatement to the island, it is not a solution by Cypriots for Cypriots. It is an arrangement engineered by foreigners for their own interests. |

I think the most important personal thing I would do would be to knock on the door of my father-in-law's house in what would have been a formerly occupied village in the Karpas and he would open the door and ask me in. That would mean a great deal to both of us.
I might then think about building a small bungalow on the land he's been promising me for the last 20 odd years where I might spend a few weeks during the GB winters (days rather like today when it's been snowing in London and it's b----dy cold!) or I might develop my own tiny, little bit of the old country in Kyrenia District for similar reasons.
Would never live full time in Cy. Cs are too noisy and argumentative and I would miss my sofa. |

Does your father-in law still live there, or are you saying he would move back there pending the ideal solution?
I imagine what you are proposing to do, regarding building a holiday home reflects the wishes of a great many Diaspora ...
Regarding your sofa-scenario ..... maybe Cypriots would become less argumentative and quieter if we had no Cyprus Problem .... |

But what would you do Nikita ... would you / could you move back to your old home?
Could you work in Cyprus / retire ... or would life continue in the same stream as now ..... |

Oh no. Bless you O. My F-i-L, along with almost all my relatives have lived in Cyprus's capital city, London, England, since the 50's. I'm sure they would spend long periods there, back in their own homes, now that they are retired, if only for tax reasons.
Yes I think many of the younger Diaspora (like me! all things are relative!) would consider holiday homes if they haven't invested already in the Free areas.
Cypriots will always find something to disagree and shout about. Comes with the territory. Must be the water. |
