My vision for the Cyprus of the future!

I would like to see a Cyprus, independed, self-sufficient, free from any interventions and interferences of any of the so-called motherlands, and with her own unique voice and role in Europe and in the surrounding area. A country which will be free and clean from any foreign military presence. A country which will be playing the role of a connecting ring between the various peoples and cultures of the surrounding area. A country which will be able to become a bridge of peace for the Middle East, Greece and Turkey.

I would like to see a Cyprus, which will prosper and pioneer to as many as possible sectors of economic and social development. A country which will be playing the role of a centre for educational, health, research, financial and tourism services for the entire Middle East and eastern Mediterranean regions.

I would like to see a Cyprus which will be offering to all her citizens and inhabitants, the highest level of protection to their individual and communal cultural identities, protection of their human rights, provision of equal opportunities for all, and the outmost respect for justice and democratic principles.

Lastly, I would like to see a Cyprus in which the protection of the environment and her multicultural heritage will be in the centre of every activity, decision and thought. A country which will not only import culture and civilisation but simultaneously and more importantly will produce and export her own.

My dear friends, both Turkish and Greek Cypriots, would you all share the above vision?
I hope for most of you the answer is yes! If indeed, please subscribe to it. If you like to add or subtract anything to it, please do so hereafter. If you have an alternative or a slightly different one, I would like to hear it.

What do I want to achieve by doing this? I would like to find out if there is any hope for this country to face the challenges of the future, united and strong, as it will be absolutely essential for any chance whatsoever, to succeed in it. If we can agree on the vision, then I believe all the rest, will have a much better chance to follow more smoothly.

I think many Cypriots share your vision. That's not the problem though, the problem is how we reach to that vision...

Kifeas I share your vision.

However it seems to me most Turkish Cypriots don't see Cyprus as one, but they see Cyprus as two. In effect they want some kind of racist separation and partition.

Right Piratis, right...that's exactly the problem, TCs want racist separation due to their racist nature, I guess. You never get tired of repeating the same crap over and over.

I am repeating your crap. Its not me that wants those things, it is you that demand them.

Would you accept to have Cyprus were all are treated equally without anybody having different rights due to his race?

I am not sure what the Tcs want.

For example Turkcyp said the other day is not bizonality their purpose but the sharing of the political power.Other people said they simply want a system they would be concentrated at one place and be governed by their own people in the framework of a Federal system.
Metecyp with Brother gave us the reasons they want a solution very honestly in the past and actually seem to agree generally with what kifeas said.
Viewpoint told us a million time wants partition.

Well, to be honest, I don't share your dream.
I am very sorry to say this but unfortunately I don't. I am a Greek Cypriot and I strongly believe that this situation we are in is a mistake.
An unsolved mistake, that should never be bothered again. Just like a beast that we shouldn't "tease".

It's been 30 years now, and no significant steps have been made. Cypriots just laze in prosperity with their Benz-es and BMWs and all Pafos and Ayia Napa properties, not worrying about the problem. It is obvious that our situation is not something a Cypriot today would care about. Fair enough.

While Southern Cyprus has managed to stand on its feet 30 years later, re-building its image and personality, re-bulding its culture and economy, Northen Cyprus has done nothing. Vanished houses and properties, all messed up, Turkish Cypriots coming "over" to find Jobs. Bad bad bad.

In my opinion, a new Berlin Wall would sound pretty fair and normal.
There's no other way. I don't like changes, neither does Cyprus. We cannot re-unite this island, as much as we want it back. It's never going to be the same again, and there's no-one that can deny that.

MicAtCyp, as in GC community, there're many opinions in TC community but one thing is clear. A great majority of TCs will be content with bicommunal bizonal federation where they live closely in the north and govern themselves while sharing power at the federal level with GCs.

But believe me, we're even more confused about what GCs want. At least we know we want bicommunal, bizonal federation but we have no idea what you guys want right now.

Do you guys want federation? What kind of federation? Do you want return of all refugees? Do you want to go back to RoC? Do you accept bizonality? Do you accept power-sharing even if it might mean TCs get more than 18%? And the list goes on....

If they govern themselves, and we govern ourselves, then how is this one country? Thats partition.

The trouble Metecyp is that it is the interpretation that is the problem. For me, the biggest problem is the restriction on ones basic human right to settle in any part of their country. Putting a cap on the number of GC's that can live in the north is wrong in the same way as restricting TC's to live in the south.

The issue has always been power sharing. Since 1974 the additional issue of separation has been added. If the wish is to have a BBF where there are caps and limits as to where people can live then in my opinion that is wrong. An effective means of allowing a cap on voting in the respective CS's means that each community has political control of one zone whist allowing the other community to have a political say without overwhelming the say of the main controling community. This eliminates the fear of one community dominating politics in the island, and lets face it, this has been the main problem. Once this problem is solved then everything else will fall into place.

As always, my position is that refugees must have the choice to return. Having pecking orders, where the refugees come at the bottom of the pile as in the Annan plan is wrong. The Annan plan is a divisive plan. Thinking about it logically and impartially, it is easy to see the big faults of this plan. Don't expect 'good will' to prevail in its operation. People that are hungry for power will take advantage of its weaknesses to serve narrowminded and selfish interests wich wuold bring us back into conflict again.
