What do you all think the economic ramifications will be for Cyprus if the country is unified? The south is pretty wealthy (at least to me), and has a strong economy. Will this hurt them? What about the north? Will it help or hurt them? What do you think?

Thankyou for your answers.

In the long run Cyprus can only prosper economically if reunification is reached. I strongly believe that if Cyprus problem havent occured then Cypriots would have been in a far better position economically than they are now.
We should all expect that Cyprus would go through some hard times economically especially in the south since they would be the ones loosing economically after a solution but as i said in the long run Cypriots can only gain from reunification.

just like the government let some things go (tax breaks ect) after the invasion the same will happen to people in the north. once the island is reunited it will take about 2 years for it to catch up with cyprus because of the huge potential of tourism.

The economy will be quadraplegic in a bizonal system.

over 82% of the population will be at the mercy of half a dozen turks.
the majority of the population will have to fund their own ethnic cleansing from their own towns and villages. There will be separate schools, separate hospitals and separate insane asylums. The Greek asylums will be packed to the shit house with frustrated business men. The greeks will fund Turks to sit on their arses collecting welfare in towns and villages stolen from Greeks. Greeks will not be allowed to go home to their towns and villages, they will only be allowed to visit. Every EU will be allowed to 'acquire' property owned by Greeks while the owners look on.

In a one citizen one vote-democratic unitary system, the economy will not be so restricted.

there may be an initial decline in the south, and boom in the north. As north prospers its cash will then be invested in the south. eventually both sides will prosper, as one grows stronger than the other, business opportunities in the other will be taken advantage of, like a see saw.

both sides' economies will benefit.

I do not see anything like prosperous reunification under a bizonal plan. I see rivers of blood lining the streets. Forget tourism. Cyprus will be a killing field. I see the fires of hell on earth.

Oh dear oh dear,Agios Amvrosios, why are you such a pessimist? Why should we kill each other under a bizonal or any system for that matter?
You know what I really believe? If there were a United Cyprus under a bizonal Federal System (to make TCs feel secure they have a state to run to if things get out of hand),and people had free choice where they wanted to live, and if they could send their kids to any school they chose (providing that every school everywhere has exactly the same curriculum, and if they were sent to the nearest insane asylum whoever was in charge, why sholudn't such such a system survive and prosper???
If I came from Australia and got a job in your town in Cyprus and lived next door to you, will you want to kill me if I did nothing to you? What make you think there would be rivers of blood? Please try to explain this to me as I am genuinely puzzled? :?

BirKibrisli,

Obviously Ayios Amvrosios is over exaggerating and dramatizing! What he probably has in mind is the fact that a great number of GC refugees whose properties will fall under the TC constituent state, will become very frustrated and angry because they will see nearly all their properties being formally usurped with extremely limited and very inadequate compensations. This will potentially turn them against the new state of affairs, either with legal actions or with even other more dynamic actions. I happen to agree with Ayios Amvrosios on this issue.

Unfortunately, Annan plan had all these ingredients in place, since the property arrangements were totally unacceptable from a legal and human rights point of view. They would have resulted to a monetary gab of some 24-28 billion US dollars of property value, in favor of the TC community (or those from the community that will get hold of these properties,) and in the expense of the GC refugees /owners.

You may read here for more details on this issue.

Unfortunately, the bandits and criminals who envisioned this plan and the bandits and criminals who accepted it as a recipe to solve the Cyprus problem, still insist that it was a good solution.

If true reunification is achieved Cyprus will be a unitary state with no ethnic divisions ethnic groups will have to cooperate if there are no enthic divisions. All refugees will have to be allowed to return to their towns and villages. Then and then only can the embargo be lifted. The alternative is that anyone with money in europe will face seizure of thier EU based assets if they exploit refugee property which makes up 91% of property in places like in the Kyrenia district. Turkish CYpriots will only do business with escaped criminals with no assets like the significant number fugitve drug lords and tax evaders avoid who absconded to the Occupied areas. Anyone with 5 cents to their name would be a moron to risk there assets to exploit refugee owned land. I would spend four times what I would get out of them on legal bills just to get a taste of justice. Opportunistic property speculators exploiting refugee properties need to do there home work before they try to exploit the situation of the refugees.

Turkey's EU entry is only entertained so long as there is a possibility that it will end its illegal occupation of Cyprus. If by the end of the EU accession process Turkey is still acting like a F*ck wit then it would have signed all sorts of censessionary treaties and instruments only to be told to f*Ck off.

The trouble is Agios Amvrosios, this could be exactly what Erdogan is hoping for.The EU to piss Turkey off,so he can get the Turkish Army off his back, and start putting his hidden plans of Islamisation of Turkey in action. While walking the EU path he has to appear as if he wants a solution in Cyprus as well.Hence the reason why they orchestrated the YES and NO votes the way they did, with the help of the UK and the USA.
Turkey being told to F88ck off is equal to Partition of Cyprus forever.I wouldn't be hoping for that if I were you.
