It does distress me that the TCs are not showing more appreciation for the electricity they are getting from the ROC. They seem to take it for granted that they will be supplied with whatever they need, for humanitarian grounds.Same goes for health care and jobs,to a lesser degree because they at least have to go to the South to get those services and to work. But as Cypozekyli is implying above any show of goodwill and cooperation WILL help bring the two communities together, however slowly.Perhaps it is not impossible to imagine a time where we will have to cooperate in more and more economic and service areas(airports, seaports, water services, health and educational areas etc).

Imagine for a minute that the ROC refused to sell the TRNC any elecriticy.
Imagine the human catastrophy that will cause (people dying in hospitals, schools nonfunctional, tourism and technology areas grinding to a halt). And the international outcry that would bring.Still, even though the opposite is unthinkable,a bit more appreciation and gratitute on the TCs behalf would be nice. :(

You are totally correct on this point and this is definately a plus for the GCs humanitarian perspective, many TCs are very appeciative but have noway of expressing this but Im pretty certain it occurs on a one to one basis. I also acknowledge that this issue has not been used by GCs leaders for policitcal gain, well done, it shows a maturity which I wish they could show on other matters.

Thank you.

You are welcome,Viewpoint.
Perhaps people can write letters to the editors of GC newspapers (in English,so that it can be translated into Greek for publication) and thank the Electricity commission and the government(if it is government controlled) for their generocity of spirit.
I think the general public in the Republic has to be exposed to some acts of gratitute on the part of the TCs. TC newspapers and TV current affairs shows can run stories to show what could happen in the North if they do not buy electricity from the South.Genuine acts of appreciation will go a long way in improving the communication between the communities.
If they put one tenth of the propaganda effort the TRNC churns out every single day into the type of human interest stories I am talking about,I am sure more than 48% of the GCs would want to live together... :(

Although I agree with you, you dont live on the island Bir so you are not aware of the dynamics behind acknowledging a positive opinion, the attitude of the Government in the TRNC is that although we are grateful for the electricity we are after all paying for it just like any other customer, so theres no need to go overboard on expressing gratitude. Plus it would expose a sensative issue for the Government that we are self sufficent and not dependent on the south for anything. This mentality is very evident in the TC community as they do not want to under the control or influence of GCs.

Thank you for your explanation and for being patient with me,Viewpoint.
I appreciate it.In your explanation lies the problem behind Cypro.
The TRNC likes to pretend that it is self sufficient while they depend totally on Turkey for most things. And the ROC likes to pretend that the TRNC does not exist while they depend to a large extend on the TRNC and the 40,000 Turkish soldiers there to define themselves. It is bizzare.
So much of both sides' energy is going into denying the realities of the situation. How can you solve a problem whose reality is denied by both sides???Beats me... :(

The cyprus government should not give or sell the occupation regime any electricity untill the turks start to hand back land. But the cyprus government never has any backbone to to do this. Why dont the turkish puppet state get there electric from there paymaster Turkey ? They can afford it with all the money they are making from selling stolen greek land, drugs ,casinos and prostitution. :allout:

Would it not make your heart bleed if the ROC refused to sell electricity to the North and innocent children in hospitals died as a result, lysi?
Is the answer to your pain inflicting more pain on the innocents of the other side???Is revenge the drink you need to satisfy your rightful outrage, nomatter who gets hurt???Would the saying by Ghandi"An eye for an eye and we will all be blind" make you think differently? I hope so. :(

I think Turkish Cypriots could be suplied electicity directly from EAC and pay EAC directly. This will be more economical for them since they are too few to take advantage of economies of scale and it is better for whole Cyprus since it will be something common for both TCs and GCs. What do you think?

Lysi, it is about time you change the record on this issue! Firstly, you know nothing about politics and the complexities of the Cyprus problem! Secondly, politically, it is in our best interest to be the ones supplying electricity to the T/C community, and not Turkey! Thirdly, since when the occupied north has become a separate state -from a RoC, a G/C and an international law perspective, set aside one that belongs to Turkey, as you defined it above! Fourth, it is the RoC that insists, and rightfully so, that the T/Cs are citizens of the RoC (and not the citizens of any other separate entity or country,) and therefore, as the legal government it has a duty to help its own citizens at a time of an urgent need such as the electricity case.

What some (or even many) T/Cs claim, namely that they are the citizens of another entity called the "TRNC," is something which we reject and dispute and consider as a pseudo-citizenship, and therefore do not ask us to make use of this very disputed by us argument, so that we avoid offering help to those the RoC regards as its own citizens. Such an assumption would be absurd and foolish, and would greatly undermine the very foundations of our political /legal struggle in relation to the nature of the Cyprus problem.
